Question about modifying brake rotors
« on: September 19, 2018, 12:12:15 PM »
Am wondering if anyone has some "scientific" documentation on solid vs cross drilled vs slotted disk brake rotors. There is no shortage of opinions and advise but I'm not interested in "trust me I know what I'm talking about" or anecdotal stuff. I did find one paper on the subject at https://easychair.org/publications/paper/8x5d. Their conclusion was that brake cycling is a significant factor in choosing drilled vs solid.

Ive always gone by 2 thoughts. First is that holes should overlap so the whole pad sees a hole through the rotation and that holes should be chamfered appropriately so as not to tear up the pads. As to which is best, you will need an engineer for that one.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

 Not understanding question.
Slotted to clear debris, and to work in the wet. Right to edge of rotor or shorter ?
 A few fine gooves.
Or slotted right thru, in stead of drilled.. please more details.

Aren't they for 2 different purposes: holes for lightness and cooling and slots for venting the gasses that build up during braking? Which is why most high performance disks have both.

Also, why? Are you going to race? I liked my thinned and drilled front rotor on my 550 because it was much lighter, which improves suspension performance, but I don't know that it made any noticeable difference in the quality of braking in normal riding.

I'm not asking why rotors are drilled and/or slotted. I'm asking if anyone here has access or a link to engineering data that documents the differences with conclusions. The aftermarket is full of sources for drilled rotors and I suspect many are purchased to add coolness to a vehicle. Also many are convinced that they work by venting pad gasses, etc. I'd like to see a study that proves it. Logical analysis isn't enough for me. Try understanding quantum physics using logic  ;D Yeah I know this isn't quantum physics (or is it?) Damn, the more I know, the less I realize I know. Hmm...

Hah, forgot to look up Brembo. Thanks. Guess what I'd like to see is their engineering studies but they might not be available. I'm an electrical engineer and used to pouring over similar electrical data/datasheets for projects. And you are correct - it's not worth debating the days of the week with me  ;D
