I call bull#$%*.  The picture of the thumb is from a black widow bite.

Not that your friend didn't have one in his sleeping bag, just...
everything else.

That ThinkGeek website has some great stuff.  I wish I had these when I was in college:

Yeah that thumb bite is a black widow or brown recluse bite. The leg bite was a camel spider attack. They bite and numb and then chew in and eat their way back out. Real fun finding a sheep in the middle of the desert that is just skull and woll and a few left over pieces of flesh. None of those bites were his. This is just a film I found, but yes he did have one in his bag. It was a wee guy. Only about six inches.

From Wikipedia:
Quote
Solifugae (Camel Spiders) are the subject of many urban legends and exaggerations about their size, speed, behavior, appetite, and lethality. They are not especially large, the biggest having a leg span of perhaps 12 centimeters (5 in). They are fast on land compared to other invertebrates, the fastest can run perhaps 16 kilometers per hour (10 mph), nearly half as fast as the fastest human sprinter. Members of this order of Arachnida apparently have no venom, with the possible exception of one species in India (see below) and do not spin webs.
In the Middle East, it is widely rumored among American and coalition military forces stationed there that Solifugae will feed on living human flesh. The story goes that the creature will inject some anaesthetizing venom into the exposed skin of its sleeping victim, then feed voraciously, leaving the victim to awaken with a gaping wound. Solifugae, however, do not produce such an anaesthetic, and they do not attack prey larger than themselves unless threatened. Other stories include tales of them leaping into the air, disemboweling camels, screaming, and running alongside moving humvees; all of these tales are dubious at best. Due to their bizarre appearance many people are startled or even afraid of them. This fear was sufficient to drive a family from their home when one was discovered in a soldier's house in Colchester [2]. The greatest threat they pose to humans, however, is their bite in self-defense when one tries to handle them. There is essentially no chance of death directly caused by the bite, but, due to the strong muscles of their chelicerae, they can produce a proportionately large, ragged wound that is prone to infection.

You gotta love those Grant Page stunts, he really was the king, eh? Now, back to a lovely breakfast of poached Camel Spider eggs, washed down with a dash of Caruba Rum! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

He sure as heck wasn't Johnny the Boy. Mebbe he was the Toecutter.

While we're double-threading, I do my Christmas shopping for my nephews at Thinkgeek. Last year I got one of them the T-Qualizer T-Shirt. My 13 year-old loved it. I got both of them the Palm Size Battle Tanks, and I had as much fun with them as they did.

And while I'm triple-threading,
I have perfected a process to convert brown beans into a gas.

Give T. Boone. Pickens a ring. He has a plan for you. You may be the first to combine wind and gas power.

Agreed. People do build them up to be more than they are. They rarely bite humans, but when they do it's not pretty, though they did get their name from eating camels.

And The Winner Is:

Do they eat the whole camel, or just the toe?

'cause I might be a camel spider.

2nd runner up:

Would you be a camel spider if you spied her camel toe?

I'd be taking a ton of pics, putting them on flickr, and bragging *every day* about what I saw. :)

actually, I'd get all anxious if I was on a trip by myself.  A little time with the familiar would make me feel better... but that's just me.

What good would it be if all the girls in the cars by me could not read it!
