anyone local ever swapped an auto trans on a newer car?  bought a 2000 alero w/ trans issues for cheap and i'm tryin' to see if its worth swapping in a used one myself for cheap or have someone else do it right...

this is how us shade tree mechanics do it:
you'll have to drop the sub-frame on some 8x8x8 blocks of wood and jack up the car body real high with a cherry picker or a block and tackle hanging from a tree branch.
makes life a whole lot easier.

weekend job if you're dedicated.  week if you are distracted easily like me.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

Doesn't matter much if it's automatic or standard, did my 94 Spirit in a day (autoFWD)  , put a clutch in my daughters 01 Civic (stdFWD) in a slow weekend (work, play, work, play), pulled the transfer case and trans out of my Bronco2, found out the new tranny wouldn't fit, had it all back together and running the same day....it's easy once you've done it a few times. probably just my imagination, but I think rear wheel drives are easier, just be ready for the oil coming out the tailshaft when you pull the driveline. Only trouble spot I can think of would be if it's necessary to remove/loosen the exhaust on yours...exhaust bolts can be nasty on any motor, the older the car, the worse they are

I did my civic plenty of times without dropping the sub frame.  and it only took a couple hours.
But I did that #$%* for a living for years, so...

think it would go kinda like - jack car up real high. use handy engine hanger loop to hang engine. remove subframe. swap trans and reassemble.

still a pita without a lift.

Front wheel drive and me and my pop didn't care to touch it.

Not even clutches.

Kind of stuff I like to pay other people to sweat and toil over.

+1.  Your time is better spent on a motorcycle.  Car = Necessary Evil = let someone else struggle with it.  Unless you're highly skilled in these matters, let someone with the skill and equipment to do it, imo.

i'm not gonna do a rebuild, just swap in a used low mileage one...i know a rebuild is over my head...still troubleshooting it, could still possibly be any of the following that are causing the hesitation and hard shifting:
- Bad MAF Sensor
- Bad MAP Sensor
- Bad IAT Sensor
- Vacuum leak
- Bad IAT Sensor Harness
- Bad Fuel Pump

This is fun...yeah, not really

Just rent a transverse engine hoist. You crawl under it and unbolt motormounts, then go up top and pull it up. then you can unbolt it from the engine, do the swap and lower it back down as quickly as your skill allows. I've seen it done in 20 minutes.

Oh, And HI, I'm going to get my leg finished on friday and then I'm going to get a gun.
Why? Cause I want one.

The trans guy said it was the trans, I'm the one troubleshooting everything else, praying its one of the cheaper fixes.  There's tons of threads on the web about people w/ similar issues and it being fuel/vacuum related.

It would be a lot easier to test/fix those things instead of swapping a tranny first...
