Has anyone seen any rear racks with a back pad being made recently? I’d like to change mine (came from PO) to a lower more streamlined unit powder coated black. My current one is high.

Nothing new but there are some nice used ones out there, especially if you don't mind getting one powder coated. I tossed one out a year ago, Out of a truckload of junk it's the only thing I would have passed on to someone.

Not sure it's what you want, and it's only avail in chrome - I've asked.

Also somewhat pricey.

I don't know. I have the same rack, and I would like to replace it with something small for when my kids start riding with me.

When I took my CB out of long term storage, it was fitted with a 30" sissy bar that was great for passenger confidence and for travel, but definitely not cool for the new millennium. Cobra accessories was running their ads with the tag line "Anything is Possible", so I emailed them describing the same thing you want. I got a "sorry, no can do" reply. So, my suggestion is: cut/weld/powder coat what you have and make it into what you want. If it comes out nice there will be a market here for more.

Although I don't weld, there is a guy here on Maui known for some great fabrication. I'm going to see what he can do for me.

Since I read this I have been thinking.
A smaller rack th a most of the 70,s types would be pretty handy. And maybe someone making them could sell a few. Something along the lines of this. But with lines that compliment the Cbms better.
What do you guys think? Backrest or not removeable backrest ? Footprint big enough to carry helmet, or not?
Something between this pic and the big touring racks.
I think I have enough bending equipment.
Chrome is not on the table for starting to make some.

In the photo, behind the bike:
On the left is Kahoolawe, the Navy used to bomb it for practice, now it is slowly being restored.
On the right is Lanai.
In the middle is Molokini Crater, a popular tourist dive site, even though the fishery here is pretty stressed.

As for back racks, YES.
I was thinking a small back rest across, just behind the seat (so it still opens). I’d prefer non removable, integrated into the framing to reduce the number of fasteners.
For me, I’m going to find or make a “backpack” out of leather maybe to mount on it. Just large enough to carry some light rain gear, outside pocket for phone, glasses, etc.
The picture is close to what I’m thinking of. Maybe a support down to the stock rail that goes over the fender.
I bet many would be snapped up. I’ll go first, how much deposit do you want 754?

Also, see how high my rack is above the K0 tail light? I think it would look better if it were lower and closer to the tail light. And see the back rest frame? It bolts on in a rather clunky way.
More streamlined would be great

what do you think you would charge for something like that 754? i've been looking for a long time and can't find a damn thing other than a small $300 hepco becker. i think something a little larger than your photo would be nice. i'm for no back rest.

Here is another idea...modular rack set up that can accommodate side bags as well as rear rack. Made by forum member TTR400 (Kevin in SA). Kevin made this for my CB750 - quality is excellent! Can be used with/without side racks as required.

Another possibility ...

The mounting holes do not line up with shock and flasher mounts so some "S" shaped brackets are required. The flashers also have to go to the back of the rack.

I've been thinking about how to modify it to accept panniers and like the approach taken by Andy/TTR.

Could I get one with modular pannier rack for a 550? To borrow some of Kevin in SA's ideas...aka TTR.

I would need the panniers or rack with relocation mount for the rear turn signals...
I have a nice chrome rack on the 550 but need Pannier racks capable of handling 30 lb a side...so that is a foot peg and rear cross support bar . With racks tying into shock mounts as well as rear turn signal mounts.
