Kickstarter moving drive sprocket - CB550
« on: September 20, 2018, 04:37:40 PM »
Hey guys

In the middle of reassembly of my CB550. The motor has been sealed up and done for awhile and we're getting everything back onto the frame.

We threw on the Kickstarter and decided to see if it was functioning. The Kickstarter moves extremely easily and seems to be turning the drive sprocket on the other side of the engine. Not sure what could be causing this, hoping someone else has run into this.

A couple details that may or may not be connected:

1) The engine was stripped down to nothing and reassembled
2) The clutch has been totally replace, the Clymer manual was a bit odd on this install, I had no idea how far to tighten those 4 bolts that go through everything, could this be affecting anything?
3) The clutch cable has not been reinstalled, so I cannot disengage the clutch

Any thoughts? Really really hoping I don't need to totally dissemble and split the cases again

If the clutch is engaged and the trans is in gear it will move the counter shaft sprocket. If it is in neutral and the sprocket is moving hold on to it and operate the kicker, it shouldn't move the sprocket at all in neutral.

Hope that made sense!

Absolutely, that makes sense.

Are you supposed to bolt those 4 clutch bolts all the way down so the springs are fully compressed?

Any explanation as to why the kickstarter is so easy to push down? I can do it by hand with dry little effort.

If you don't have the spark plugs installed then there's no compression and it will turn over easily, but even with them installed the 550 is super easy to kick-start.  I can start mine by hand no problem.
