Got my "Dream" bike!

First some history. As a teenager in the 1960s wrenching at the local Honda shop my bedroom wall was plastered with clippings from Cycle World Magazine of Honda's many race victories of the day. Soon Honda offered their 50cc CR110 and 125cc CR93 production racing bikes to the public and I got to see them in action at a road race at the old Sacramento State fairgrounds and at local AFM events.

The 1962 8.5 hp 14K rpm 50cc 90+mph CR110-


Much later in 2004 Honda produced the CB50R Dream 50 race bike to commemorate the original CR110. Many dealers bought them just for display. I lusted after one but could never justify buying one just to drool over since it wasn't street legal.

The Dream 50R


Then a few years ago I found out that Honda had produced a street legal version of the Dream 50 for the Japanese market, the DOHC four valve 13.5K rpm 5 speed CB50V. And at that point I had a new bike at the top of my bucket list. After becoming infatuated with the idea of owning a street legal Dream 50 I recently made some inquiries and was steered to a decent example up for auction in Japan-



So now a couple months later my little Dream is now reality. It was a lightly used bike mostly needing some cosmetic upgrades and mechanical attention which was perfect for my needs - I scored a bucket list bike while also getting an exciting new shop project. After just a few rides I have to say this is one of the most exciting bikes I've owned, never mind it's tiny size. (Although it does have an aftermarket 89cc big bore kit which makes it much more practical for road use.) The little sucker just plain works. It fits me, brakes and suspension are very good, and the eager little high revving engine happily delivers decent cruising speed even up grades.

Here are a few shots of some of the work I've done to it. Engine covers, fork sliders, and hubs needed stripping and re-painting or buffing and clear coating. The before-

And since the race-only model was imported to the US in 2004, OEM spokes are readily available here.



About the only major problem was a WOT missfire which after much gnashing of teeth I found to be a way oversized carb (24 mm versus stock of 16 mm). And the PO had chopped out the front of the air box and tossed the air box side cover to make room for one of those hideous pod "filters". So I did some reconstructive surgery using PVC plate and polyethylene and rivets which allowed installation of a large paper filter from a Honda industrial engine. I forgot to take "before" pics but here is the reconstructed box-





After experimenting with a smaller 22mm carb (still too big) I settled on a Keihin PC20 carb. Right now I've cobbled on a Chinese copy until the genuine Keihin arrives. Then I'll fab up proper manifold and air box connections and I'll be down to just needing a bit of paint repair on the tank and fenders. But in the meantime I'm spending lots of time either staring at the little gem or riding it on local twisty roads. It made quite the splash when I stopped by a nearby Honda shop!







I'm trying to add a short youtube clip of the bike running but it just appears as a black box in the preview screen. Tried all kinds of ways with no luck. I'll see if it appears if I actually post. Here goes....

What neat bike!  I saw the road race version and I thought what fun it would be on a tight curvy road.

I would like a small bike like that.

The Sport 90, S90, Honda made in the early to late 60s was 89cc and a honest 8 hp, too bad it wasn't 8hp at the rear wheel, that would have been a screamer.
The S90 can be punched out to 104cc with overbore but you run into the carb and exhaust challenges, carb not as much as exhaust. Loosing the stock exhaust look detracts from the bike's beautiful lines. Here's a pic of my Nov '69 build S90 when I bought it in '08. Previous owner tried to use it as a CL90...transmission is not really setup for climbing like the S90. It is possibly one of the last US made S90s as it had a headstock VIN plate, unheard of by the hundreds of owners on the Yahoo S90 group, and it identifies it as being compliant with EPA laws effective at the date of manufacture shown which is 11/69.  Most S90s you have to look for the Wiring harness tag in the T backbone frame beneath the tank. If it is still there it gives you a rough idea of the year of the bike as that harness originally had a dated tag. Many times it is missing and you have to go by the carb style, exhaust, etc.
Sorry I digress about the S90...my apologies.

I thought about buying a Dream 50 from Japan in '08/'09 as there were several showing up by then in the US being imported after the fact from Japan.

Is your 89cc kit a Takagawi or something like that? or another manufacturer.

There was a time that the Dream 50s were being raced in the PacNW and other nearby tracks and they were a blast from all reports. Having bikes that were stock and so closely matched made for great racing. As I think you have mentioned, the bikes feel like they are going much faster than they are. A small bike that doesn't have much mass doing 60 to 90 mph is kind of scary at first. The bikes being ideal for Japanese sized individuals not tall and big people. Was in Japan in early 1996-98 timeframe and you didn't tower over the youth who were getting much taller than traditional stature for Japanese.  I was over a head taller than most of the Japanese I saw on the streets of Tokyo. I am 6'4" and a big strapping guy. Japan is a fascinating place, go visit it if you can swing it in your lifetime, overall a fantastic experience I had being there on work and playing tourist when we weren't working our butts off.

The Dream 50s in Japan were quite varied in customized form, I recall some pics but do not have them of some of the mods done to individualize them. Most were very tasteful but for a stock purist it was blasphemy.

That is some very nice work Nova? Wonder how much to make one with a longer baffle chamber and without the tilt upward unless that is to provide more ground clearance when you are dragging a knee around a corner. :) ??? ?  Seriously do not like to drag a pipe cornering aggressively or in a avoidance maneuvers. Your motor a 104cc or stock?  Presuming you have an S90?

This is a customer's bike.  He requested the upturn like that.

      This is a pretty cool post & educational to me. I knew there were smaller Hondas, that were impressive, like this. But, hadn't seen or heard much detail on them. So, congratulations on getting Your Impressive little Honda & thank you for this educational post. The smallest one I had ever seen, was way back in the early 1960's, when I saw a Benly 125 Super Sports (I think that is what it was called, someone correct me, if I am wrong) . It was racing around an asphalt track, in New Port Arkansas. It had a beautiful sounding set of megaphones, that gave that little twin, an awesome sound. I even looked for one, when I got to Northern Japan, for my 2 year tour, while in the Air Force. So then, I looked for a Super Hawk (my next quest) and ended up with a CB72 Hawk. I have always been impressed by those Hondas of Racing vintage & Street. Thanks for posting the video as well and Enjoy your Prize ride.  ;)

      Yeah, that is the one I wanted and, I guess, like a dummy, I thought my being in Japan, I could more easily find one & for a price I could afford. BUT, I never saw one OR a Super Hawk, that was my other "Want"! I did see 1 CB450

"Black Bomber", after I found & bought my CB72 Hawk. Ah, but, for me, that's history.  I have a CB77 Super Hawk & Happy.  ;) And thanks for posting that photo. Those were (and apparently still are Tough!  8)

Very good morning to all. I would need to make a valve adjustment for my honda 50 dream, but I have no idea which gauge is necessary to adjust them properly. Could someone help me? Millions of thanks

If your bike is actually a Dream 50, model CB50V, CB50W, or CB50R then valve clearance is 0.15 mm. But if your "Honda 50
" is a C100, C102 or C110 from the 1960s then valve clearance is 0.05 mm.
