Charging System Help - Dimensions And An Intro
« on: September 27, 2018, 07:34:35 PM »
Hello!

Hopefully a future SOHC4 Owner by means of a 76 CB550F.

Need some other projects and clutter to sell before I can allow myself to purchase it. But it will come...

Until then I am planning, and reading the service manual.

My question relates to the charging system of these bikes. My buddy and I have an idea for a possible solution to some issues i've seen regarding the charging systems, mainly for the cb650, but this would extend to the others as well.

I have a XS650 former project, now ebay queen. And those little babies have some nice options for solid aftermarket electrical foundations. Which got me thinking about proof of concept ideas for these SOHC4s.

I'm a Mechanical Engineer, he's Electrical. And we both have lots of free time at work, Solidworks, and access to a machine shop. And drive to make something people want.

And we like money.

I would really appreciate if anyone get me some accurate dimensions of the stator and rotors for this bike? And if someone has a CB650 around, that too would help.

I would need, in imperial or metric:

1. ID, and Depth of Generator Cover
2. OD, ID, and Depth of Field Coil
3. OD, ID, and Depth of Stator Coil
4. OD, Depth, and Shaft OD for the Rotor

Only need some precision. like +-0.05 for all above, and the best you can do for the Rotor shaft OD.

If not, eventually I will get a CB550 to play with, but these dimensions would help us get started on this little project that may or may not fail horrifically.

Weeee.

Thank you for any help, and I cannot wait to be part of this family.

-Josh

You might take some time and read this thread:

I believe I have the spare parts you need, if you would like to have them, I’ll swap you those and some field testing for a production unit  ;) Always happy to help folks engineer new parts to these old bikes.

Oh, BTW, it appears Anders has taken leave of the forum and his mild interest in producing the 500/550 solution has stalled. So there’s a market ready for your creation.

Thank you so much for the offer!

I would only need dimensions for the moment but should this come to production, whoever helps I will gladly give a unit.

We are going to test some bench top mock ups using various custom or stock parts. Id need a full bike to make a final bolt on solution. Hopefully where my future project comes in.

If you have no problem sending me parts to use for measuring and such, I would gladly accept. We can exchange info in private to establish trust for return of parts and such.

I am in Pittsburgh, so anyone nearby (within an hour distance)with any SOHC4 who can let me bring some instruments to measure their stuff is also an option. Even more helpful since I can get enough data to engineer it fully.

Id love to make a solution for any SOHC4, so any donors are welcome.

This will be fun!

Ah. True. I'll fix that tonight when I browse around.

the rotor shaft(end of crankshaft snout) on these is a tapered non keyed type.

Hmm. I can work with that. So I'd need more detailed dims of the crank shaft end to know what I have to work with.

I do have a seperate silly concept idea for a planetary gearing system so that gives me a little bit more room to work with... Bwahaha.

The planetary idea is for the charging system to utilize the bikes high rpms and use a smaller stator assembly. . Just a fun concept. The focus is still a simple robust charging solution

the alternator side on these is dry not bathed in oil.

Well, the 750 alternator is a bit wet as the crankshaft dribbles through the end bearing to lube the starter bearing - but it isn't sitting in oil. As far as I know all the others are dry, with crank seals keeping oil out of that area. Unless you start them with the cover off, but that's a mistake most only make once.
