I dropped the top case off to Adam Milazzo. He does aluminum welding and has bailed me out before with some exceptional work. Once the repair is completed I will get the cases blasted.

I picked up the top case, the repair was excellent of course. The past few days i was able to strip the lower case of all the internals. Upon inspection and help from JamesSussex I realized the bolt that is near the sprocket cover was broken. Not one but both. Looks like the PO forgot to mention that to me. Luckily was was able to pull the half assed drilled one out and the other one came out with vise grips. The cases are with my mom's husband to do the thread repair.

Process today as I was able to remove the top end. Found the reason why she was pissing oil where the cylinder meets the top case. The base gasket seems huge! Inside of the lower case in almost every cylinder area. I'm not sure what to think of the cylinders. They look score but they are smooth.

I'll measure Cal however it looks like maybe it shifted or the incorrect gasket?

Side note I talked to the son of the original owner and he said the cases were swapped out literally after he got it in 1970 due to the chain. Also the shop where the bike was bought new, cases swapped out is still open in Maryland. The shop is Pete's Cycle.

Looks black, not stock. You might be able to get away with honing, can you measure the bore?

BTW - get rid of that couch and you will have room for a blue 550!

Cases have been split! Tomorrow will be the day I plastigage the crank in the new cases. Any tips from anyone on how to go about the plastigage procedure?

tews,as I found out those markings on the rods are japanese symbols,there is a table somewhere for checking bearing size on these,maybe a member has one,later rods had ink markings on them.bill

Thanks Bill, they are Japanese markings after doing some research and a member on here reached out with the list.

Side note, I ordered the Engine oil seal kit from Vital. If I recall he is a member here and also makes the oil pump kits as well.

The most pressing issue for me was the lack of know how when it came to plastigage. Today i swapped in the brand new Black bearings Hondaman suggested and they all measured equally across the board..

.038 If I recall correctly, these are within limit and I can now move on to reassembly! As of now the biggest hurdle is crossed!.

Acetone wipe down, primered, and first coat of paint on the proper case K0 engine. The paint is freshly sprayed and will receive the last coat once this coat is dried.

Well this project has been pushed aside so many times this summer. The bike market has been flooded with gorgeous survivors and I have been finding a few hence why this K0 keeps being put on the back burner many months. I recently came across a few nice bikes to include the elusive Sandcast which I shared with a few members here. My latest find was the immaculate 400F and now I am the owner of a nice survivor 75 Z1.

Anyways, this K0 has my attention again and the engine was mounted today with the help of my oldest son. Covers will be mounted hopefully over the weekend. If anyone has a K0 tach, I'm looking to purchase one. I threw in 2 pics of the Z1. Currently rims are removed as the new Avons are being mounted and balanced.

Before you wax, ask your friend the painter about clear coating. I’ve often thought that would be the best way to protect such a perfect, original finish. After that, wax away!
