old guy/efi, oh my
« on: July 23, 2018, 11:14:12 AM »
This old Dad put a Holley Sniper Stealth 4500 EFI on the super comp dragster. I really need to hone my computer skills. Actually I need some computer skills to hone first. L0L. The first try it fired up and idled, The first run was about 330' and it seemed OK so we ran a full throttle stopped 8.90 try. It ran 8.84 on our first guess and it appears the ecu is learning so we can tune from there.
The car will run 7.60's in the quarter mile but we run super comp so we slow it to 8.90 with a set of throttle blades under the carb that throttle and open on a timer.

I haven't screwed it up yet. It appears if I can make it work I can get sponsored for it. My farquin printer won't work, I really need a hard copy of the manual. I'll get that done tomorrow. We have a race Saturday and a race Sunday then the next week the same again. We'll need a win or two to stay in the hunt for a championship. Third or fourth in season points is nice but when you win a little you get hooked harder.

How do the throttle blades under the throttle body EFI play together?
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

That's the question. We have a relay wired to ground that activates a 30% fuel offset only while it's on the stop. I wondered if we'd need a linkage stop so the TPS would know it let off the throttle. It seems to be more consistent than the carb. My driver says the throttle response is amazing. We're on Q16 fuel so our target A/F ratio is 12.8 to one.

We went rounds last Saturday and went out first round sunday. Same opponent beat us, his reaction time was .000 something sat. and .008 sunday. The group was only 14 cars and there were four perfect lights and several dead on 8.90 runs. One guy was 8.900X on two runs in a row, then lost first round with an 8.92. We are now in second place but the top four are within one round of racing and two more are close behind.

This thing can be hooked up with 4 wires and a temp sensor. In closed loop it learns what the engine wants and can be set to that fuel map, then the tuning gets finer. I can wire in two O2 sensors and take an average for it to work with.
A friend has a multi post efi with an old obsolete Holley commander 8. He can upgrade to the new Dominator ecu and with a little wiring have the new software operating his old efi.
I may make that leap at some point.

I moved the o2 sensor from #2 to #5. It ran lousy. I'm assuming it was too close to the collector and at lower rpm's it sucked air back into the pipe. #2 is longer, straighter and further from the collector. It ran 8.894 and after adding .02 to the stop timer it ran 8.917. Traction was pretty good, I think the humidity went up as the temp went down. A pretty good setup for 8.90 class this weekend.

My racepak data recorder went on the fritz, I got a new SD card, new laptop with windows 10, ran a software update, scanned all the sensors and did a telemetry session online with a racepak tech. We think it works now. I'm working on learning the advanced part of the Holley EFI software, It's coming slowly, the racepak tech said they are writing software to work with the Holley EFI, hopefully I'll be able to record all the data on one program.  The learning curve is steep but I'm making progress.

It turns out the car is like a 500 Honda with heated grips and driving lights, The alternator puts out 75 amps but can't keep up going down track, it's running an msd, 8 injectors and an ecu, water pump, two fuel pumps, data recorder, delay box, and a big old fan.
I'm ordering a 120 amp alternator and a new Optima yellow top battery.
