CB550 F1 Clutch Questions
« on: September 26, 2018, 01:50:41 PM »
Rebuilt the engine on my CB550 F1 , about ready to attempt to start it but the clutch Is dragging.
Initially thought it was an issue with adjustment or the operating arm but pretty sure that that is ok and operating correctly. Clutch basket and centre are fine , no notches or anything so looking at the plates or possibly oil.

Done a bit of digging and I have a couple of questions.

Plain plates are original ( came with the bike at least) I did buy new friction plates and I have read that some are supplied that are incorrect thickness. Mine are all 2.75 - 2.80mm . Is this correct.

I have also heard that the friction plates should be smooth one side and grooved the other. Not sure if this is correct but mine are grooved both sides . Which is correct.

Finally , I have used 10w/40 semi synthetic oil. Could this be an issue ?

Appreciate any help …...Keith

I guess we need more information......how do you know the clutch is dragging? If you're putting the transmission into gear without the engine running and turning the rear wheel, it's not unusual to feel the clutch dragging.

To answer some of your questions, grooves on both sides of discs is normal and your oil is OK as long as it compatible with wet clutches.
