I think it really depends on end use.. it was common to use mainly rear mounts ,maybe 1 set of fronts, on drag bikes..
Works as long as the bike handles ok.
I think on a roadracer, the stiffness required to the neck is more crucial.. but Egli and others seemed to come up with working solutions that handled well.
