Black 550
« on: October 06, 2018, 05:38:55 AM »
Hello from Leicestershire UK,
Still riding my VFR at 70 years of age. Recently brought a 550 K4, it was a non runer sat in an outside lockup at our local dealer looking a bit worse for wear. They reckoned the starter motor was shot but it turned out to be the sprag clutch plus it looked like someone had attacked the wiring with an axe and reconnected it with tape. After a lot of fiddling and bypassing cut out switch I managed to get it running at 3K revs but it will not tick over below that so it's time to strip the carbs and give them a good clean. The idea is to get it running smoothly and then see about a better refurb.

Welcome from the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Sounds like you have good starting point on the project.

Thanks for the welcome,
After numerous British bikes, my first Japanese bike was a CB550F back in 1976 so this resto will stir a lot of memories. 1976 was one of the UK's longest hottest summers so I rode that bike everywhere and it never missed a beat.

Dismantled the carbs, one air srcew had a missing spring and all 4 were missing O ring seals, are the seals needed?? Otherwise it looked pretty clean but I have been told it last ran about 2004 so who knows whats stuck inside the jets. Gonna boil them and blow thru with an air line see if that helps.
I had to remove the battery tray and filter box to get them out is that normal?
