Cb500 fuel tank petcock
« on: October 11, 2018, 12:34:49 pm »
Hey all, I have a cb500 fuel tank with a single out petcock. I’m putting it on a cb550 that needs two outs. Is it as simple as just using a y splitter? Thanks!

I didn't have any luck trying to affix an aftermarket single-out petcock to my 550 tank (the threads on the petcock and bung weren't synched appropriately to allow the face of the petcock with the on/off/reserve lever to be oriented correctly - never tried a 500 petcock). I did have a "Y" splitter affixed to it that seemed to flow ok. Ended up ditching that solution and found a NOS 550 petcock. Pricey, but works as designed:

Thanks. Maybe I was misleading with my question. I’m not swapping the petcocks, I’m swapping the entire tank. I’ll have a single out where I should have two like on the original tank. I’ll try the y split and see if anything changes.

Wait, that petcock doesn’t have an independently spinning coupler nut like most petcocks? Normally you hold the petcock in the orientation you want and then spin the nut. They don’t machine the petcock and tank bung threads to make the petcock land in the right orientation. That would take a lot of setup and thinking ahead when the petcocks with independently spinning nuts already exist.

The linked item from eBay works as you describe. The cheap aftermarket one I received when I purchased my bike from the PO, did not. I believe this is the one I received when I picked up the bike originally:
