.....
I don't think it's a matter of suitability. I think the process of welding cranks itself for these applications is flawed.
But having a large hot reciprocating mass disintegrate between my nether regions a couple of times may have clouded my judgment .  ;D

Cheers,
Brian

Imagine that!  :D

I could understand that....😳.  Out of curiosity what timespan were you running and breaking welded cranks?

George

We did three cranks over two seasons and to be honest only one ventilated.
They all seemed to fail on the overrun though.

Brian

Sure, but in the case of a 69mm stroke CB750 engine, is there much functional difference between a 1.68 and a 1.70 rod ratio?  That’s it between a factory length rod an an 1100f rod in that engine.

George

No there's not George but in my case these where the two options that I had .
And many years ago in the back block's of Australia those two options (factory rods) where the only one's available.
The std 750 rods or the M4 1100 rods that where stronger had 17mm pins and where a little closer to optimal length.

Cheers,
Brian

Bear Brian,

Do you still run the DOHC crank, cb1100 rods, and HYVO,  or have you moved on?
Thanks

I suppose a next step would be to contact Scat/Bryant/Lunati/ whoever, to ask about the requirements for a run of cranks.  With modern cnc I'd think the design part would involve measuring a stock one or a properly modified one and determining the case clearance issues for the rods and weights. My case is clearanced a lot but it's swinging aluminum MTC rods too.

I don't run them these days but the two complete motor's I still have use that configuration.
And yes I have moved............to retirement, old age and sanility. ;D

Has the counterweights OD been modified on your welded stroker?

I can’t answer for Don about his vintage welded crank, but in the case of the welded stroker cranks Marine Crankshaft does, they do not alter the counterweights.  It can be balanced as is.

Thanks George that's good to know. Has your cases been clearances too. Or do you run steel rods?

I don't believe so, the case is only clearanced for the MTC aluminum rods.

I'm intrigued by the splined end on the 900 crank. When I get my car engine out of the machine shop, assuming I'm not broke I may need to grab a few parts off of ebay and pay a visit to some local machinist crazies I know.  I was offered a cb900 engine that the cam chain had eaten a slot into but thought I had enough junk already. lol.
