Universal speedometer/tachometer wiring issue
« on: October 13, 2018, 11:05:18 AM »
Hey everyone!
Got to the wiring stage of my rebuild 77 cb750k and earlier i had bought this universal speedo and a matching tachometer. Im not too great with wiring and electrical but been able to do most of it.
This part im completely thrown off though. What step do ii need to take? These wires dont match colour wise to the harness :/

Use a battery,  and start finding pairs of wires that go to each function. For instance, put the yellow wire on positive, and try a green or black wire on the negative,  until you find the proper ground for the yellow.  When one of the indicators light up, mark that pair with tape. On to the next color, repeat.

You have 4 circuits that need power, but 7 wires, so one ground may be for 2 functions,  or the housing itself will be a ground for something,  likely the backlight.

Yup! There are 2 grounds. One for the back light (blk and red) and then the other black ground wire seems to circuit with the 2 yellow (flash indicators), green (neutral), and blue (highbeem )

Some progress! Need to find out which harness wire to connect them to now..

You need the wiring diagram to match the wires.

He has a wiring diagram (as seen in his photo), it's not a stock gauge.

Oups, I didn't noticed the photo.

Did they provided some info with the gauges? Like what color is use for power, ground, light, etc... ?

If no, you must do like 540nova wrote, use a battery and identify each wire of the gauges.
