750f caliper guide pin rubber
« on: October 16, 2018, 04:11:03 PM »
One of the three rubber covered guide pins has a much tighter fit than the other two. It has what appears to be a slightly larger diameter or thickness rubber piece and I'm wondering if this is ok. It does move in the hole but doesn't wiggle at all like the others, and is so tight that it must be inserted slowly or the pin pushes through the rubber tube. I'm guessing it's an aftermarket replacement since Oem seems to be discontinued.  How critical is the play on these?  I think it will work but maybe not as well as the originals. A pair of caliper hangers is on eBay for $30 if I want to get them for the pins, but maybe the old ones have shrunk and it is supposed to be a tight fit. The one on the bottom is fatter. Who knows?

You don't say? Thanks for adding more info, now I understand.

Do you really want to save money on brakes?

Same pin on Red is easily sliding in and out but no wiggle.  My brakes - 78SS - have one pin with rubber the other one w/o.

Your welcome, thanks for the responses.
Right, one with rubber on each side of forks and one on rear hanger.
My question is: is the proper fit so tight that there is a vacuum and a pop created when removing the rubber ended pin quickly, or do they slide very easily allowing complete and instant freedom of motion? Left side rubber covered pin pops if pulled out quickly, and must be inserted slowly enough to allow air to escape. The rubber coated one on the right side of fork and at rear wheel doesn't pop and goes in without any resistance other than what is caused by the grease. Bigger pin is tight on right side caliper hanger and almost doesn't fit at all on rear hanger. I'll spend the $30 in a heartbeat, if needed. If they are fine as is, not so quick to spend. I like the way the looser pins fit, but am not sure if that's how it was designed to be.  Seems to me that since two hangers have the same characteristics with their respective pins, that the tight one is to big. Are the rubbers on the pins that move freely dried out and smaller than when new?  Or, does it really matter very much? Might be worth the $ to see how some other hangers and pins compare to these!
What say ye?

Figured it out my own damn self! Both front brakes were dragging one side worse than the other so I ripped the suckers offa there and scraped out all the crud, ordered new seals and blahblahblah, put the fat pin on the back and will see how it works with my fresh caliper rebuild and cleanup! BAM!
