Hello, new here, just bought a 76 cb400f last weekend.

The bike is titled as a 76 but was built in may of 75.

It has red side covers.

Which leads me to ask is it a left over 75 titled and sold as a 76?

Probably the latter, although for DMVs it's only when it was first registered that matters. Call it what you want! The big question is -- are you going to go back to stock bars?

What, those bars dont say "super sporty" to you?

OP i'm sure you already know this but it looks like you're missing the rear hub brake.

Yes, the handle bars, as well as the crash bars, have already been removed.

The bike belonged ta a friends wife and had sat in his garage for the past 40 years.

It ha low miles, and is in ''very good'' condition.

My plan is to replace any part that doesn't look new and can't be made to.

I have already ordered in 20 odd parts including factory bars and all required hardware.

Yes I had to remove the brake hub, to be able to push it up on my trailer.

The friction material had frozen to the drum.

With that mileage those should be OEM shoes, but I recall them being riveted...?

That front-facing horn, along with the speedo-cable bracket is typically found on 1976 models. Perhaps it's a "transition" bike?

AFAIK, the horn and the tins are the only way to tell '75s from '76s.

Me too. It's the worst thing about drum brakes, effectively it is the opposite of fail-safe as when the friction material detaches from the metal shoes then it is pretty much guaranteed to lock the rear wheel up.

That's a lovely looking 400f in any event, won't need much to get it back to stock and will be a pleasure to own. I would treat it to a set of Avon AM26 tyres too, they really work so well on 400Fs and whatever tyres it has on now are probably pretty ancient, going by the brake.

My '75 400F had the round rear pegs.

Honda was sued for retitling bikes, my sold as a 73 cb500, was a retitled 72 even after my brother asked that question. In April or May of 75 Honda settled the class action lawsuit and their response was to immediately begin producing 76's. Thus there aren't as many 75's as there are 76's. That's the way I remember it and Honda sent me $37 or something like that to settle up over the k2/73 cb500 four.

That is going to be one seriously nice cb400F by the way. I'll check the date on my 75. edit, the date is 11/74 on mine serial number well under 3,000. Must be a sandcast cb400F right?

If you go to p.2 of the combined Parts List of the CB400F, F1 and F2 and look at the engine- and framenumbers there, you will know what model you own and you will have the 'area code' as bonus. The 'year' is irrelevant. http://www.honda4fun.com/pdf_parts_list/pdf_spac400/CB400_1.pdf

erly bikes have the food rests at the sving arm..later models have them mounted on a frame loop..(European bikes)..the under sunk fuel cap is also on later bikes..

That bike has a very nice OEM exhaust looking at the pics, and that is a nice plus for a survivor 400f.

the '76 US models had black side panels - I have never seen that.

Have just found a pic of a black panneled 400F; don't like it!!

Mine is titled as a 1975, but has very early VINs. 10030xx with engine 40 numbers above frame. Based on the link Deltarider gave with vin's it is a very eary production. No doubt retitled as a '75.
