Topic: Tank fitment cb360 / cb500t tank on CB500F

Yeah, so this pretty stupid. Tested fitment of a cb360 tank on my cb550 before I had installed the carbs. The tank has now been painted etc and you guessed it... petcock hits the carbs.

So long-term solution (since I want to use the cb360 tank) is to move the petcock and repaint.

looking for a short-term (possibly longterm) solution, would a CB500T tank fit without moving the petcock? I have a line on a decent CB500t tank, but before I make the effort to grab it, wanted to get forum feedback on fitment. This seems like a pretty common swap on these bikes, so hopefully some has can give me a quick answer.

Before anyone states the obvious...I sold the original tank (again stupid), and CB500/CB550 tanks in good condition seem to demand quite the premium these days. Just trying to get back on the road so I can enjoy the remaining few weeks of decent weather.

 If I remember correctly, the 500T isn't a direct bolt on either.

bummer. anyone can confirm this who has done the swap. Scott, you have an extra tank you want to part with for cheap?

I have a 1975 550k tank with the early-style catch and cap, a good petcock, and good internal condition, but it needs a crease and small hole inflicted by handlebars fixed to be put back on the road.  The paint that's on it is about 10 years old and fish eyes are starting to surface, but I know there's great primer that's been blocked smoother than a baby's underneath the filler layer that's causing the problems.

Hey, thanks for the response. really looking for a tank that can be run as is to get me back on the road while the other one is painted etc. Looks like this would need a bit more work than I can put in at this time. If my current tank wasn't going through major surgery I would consider it.

If you cut off the bung and move it will you need to repaint? The underside, yes, but it’s thin metal and doesn’t need a lot of heat to weld it back on. I MIG’d mine and it went pretty quick.

I’d say just the handling during the process is where it would be the most susceptible. Not being damaged by the welding/brazing.
