Matching it exactly, is difficult.

I have a few areas on the 400 frame that need addressed.

Rust removed and repainted.

Do any of you have thoughts on what specific brand and

type of rattle can paint comes closest.

To blending in well with the factory black?

Harbor Freight sells a frame paint that is almost an exact match for the factory paint. I have used it on my GL1000, CB550, and CB750. I highly recommend it.

I have used Rustoleum Appliance epoxy , black of course, on two CB 750 frames so far. No primer, only lots of sanding and cleaning

Bob does it dry fairly quick ? The aerosol rustoleum takes like a day go be able to handle.

eastwood makes a paint called under hood black. It's not a gloss, semi, or satin.

Ok, I located the H F paint locally.

However, the rust-oleum appliance brush black,

doesn't even come up, when searchin their site.

I find it in a spray can, but it says ''for indoor use''

I would like to buy both, and compare results.

Anybody know where, to buy some?

Been using Rustoleum Professional semi - gloss black w/ great results . I spray it with a siphon cup gun .Hard as rock when cured. Thins w/acetone . flows nice.

Good old, cheap Walmart paint is good, too. Not TOO shiny. Super cheap. Easy to touch up.

I have my engine out right now and I'm debating painting the frame, it needs it in some spots. I'm wondering though if i do a DIY spray job like with the paints suggested above (rustoleum appliance epoxy) then will it just chip and come off with the slightest knicks? Or can it be as strong as the original frame paint?

You need to scuff the existing paint, and then degrease it well. The "mechanical adhesion" is created by sanding/scuffing. Stick with 220 grit. Do a tidy job, and you can get a pretty result. A decent primer below (if you have rust) and it will be very durable.

Any tips for degreasing? Could I use carb cleaner since I'm going to repaint anyways? Or too harsh?

I found this, is this the paint we want? It says no primer needed? I don't have any rust aside from light surface spots here and there. I don't mind priming though if it will help the paint hold up.

Don't use carb cleaner. It can leave a residue undesirable to painting. Just use Simple Green or similar. Wash it up well, and rinse it clean. A quick wipe with Acetone or Mineral Spirits, let dry, then paint it. The Rustoleum product you linked is fine.

A quick scuff will make for a better lasting job. A couple of light coats, dry time between them.

For frames I’m a fan of POR15 with their chassis black top coat. Goes on self leveling, not too glossy, very, very tough.

Like many others here, I've used it for frame touch-ups and recommend it. Can be found at Home Depot in my area; I'd also try Ace Hardware if you have any of those nearby.

I live on the top floor of an apartment building with no elevator.. I was thinking I could blast the frame with water in the shower... then I started thinking what if I brought some other parts up here to wash them.. and then assembled the bike in the living room

Sure, why not? They are easier to roll downstairs with front brakes.

I've built a lot of outdoor stuff and painted with Rustoleum. I was never too impressed. The metal always rusted even with proper prep. For any kind of black bike parts I want to just touch up or outdoor brackets I want to paint, I use Hammerite smooth gloss black. It's way tougher than Rustoleum. Dries quickly. I put on 4 or 5 coats ten minutes apart. Downside - while it DRIES quickly, it takes a few weeks to CURE so it's not tough 'til then.

Rustoleum black was great for doing outlines when we spray painted murals in our youth. We filled in with krylon, and outlined with rustoleum. Nice crisp lines...

The Rustoleum professional is a different animal than the old school rustoleum we would buy as kids . Industrial grade paint ( i use a siphon cup and thin w/ acetone ) . Blends are VERY easy for any future damage. Never had much long lasting luck w/ POR-15 . Always prepped the surface very well but it would flake in spots . Had over 20 Alfa's that are notorious for rusting , would try por-15, Bill Hirsch Miracle Paint ( the Navy uses that also ! ) navel jelly ... ng-

1st 750k we used the Rustoleum w/ no primer and it is holding up great and the current 750F i primed it w/ a Rustoleum red primer and the semi-gloss black w/ also great results . We degreased frames w/ Toluol and a light scuff for adhesion. Even used it for the tanks , final wet sanding w/ 800 , decals and a clear coat.

In a bathtub i would also use a enviro. friendly Simple Green ( not Toluol ) .

If I don't have a spray gun, is it going to be alright to just use the rustoleum spray can? I will do all of the necessary prep to the frame .
