cheap exhaust baffle make up?
« on: November 15, 2018, 05:42:15 PM »
Redoing a basket case CB500 K1 and making my own exhaust. I went with the Emgo 26" Reverse cone mufflers and would like to build a baffle for the tip. Does anyone know what is inside these cheap eBay/amazon baffles?

if it wasn't welded in i'd say it looks a lot like corrugated cardboard.....

but its probably not, as it does appear to be welded then it appears to be a punched out screen with probably nothing behind it. it can't have any sort of repackable material as one end is welded and the other end is smaller than the welded end so you wouldn't be able to pull anything out that could be inside

so...it seems that it only has that screen as a sort of interrupter/noise killer and probably does fcuk all

some of the others that were advertised on that ad page would be better as they are the longer wrapable type, which not only do a reasonable job of quietening/getting through inspection but are rewrapable when the packing eventually burns out

another old trick with the repackable types was to wrap chicken wire round the baffle tube, not as quiet as fibreglass but lasts a long time
i blame Terry

Im not very good at the forum thing yet, I should have explained better. It was more to block the end of the pipe and look good (keep people from dropping gum down there or silly stuff like that) than actual sound absorption. I made a 4 into 2 with only 1 3/4" pipe and baffels as well as the mufflers, its pretty quiet already.

don't forget to rivet a Yoshi plate on,and stamp the end cap for proper cred, then watch as guys in parking lots or shows say I had one of those pipes in the day!

I bought 4 of these  to re- do the gutted ends of my stock '78 550 mufflers and they worked well and sound good.

You can tune the backpressure by moving the internal end cap back and forth.

Cheap enough.
