I recently aquired a 1979 twinstar 185, and is having trouble finding information on it. Am I using the wrong search words honda, twinstar, and cm185. Does any of you guys know anything about this bike. I would like to start fixing it up, but I don't want to screw anything up.

Thanks guys. Your information is much appreciated. I guess the other question is, are the parts interchangeable, because when I see ads on Ebay for parts, and they tend to lump the engine sizes together on their description. ex. (CM/CT 185, CM200, etc...) I mean are they the pretty much same engines with just different size bores. Sorry if i am using the wrong lingo but I am still new to the bike world and once againthanks for answering such remedial questions

Well, I'm no expert, and know little on these bikes... I have been told that that cm200t engine will fit in a 185 frame, but i never got a chance to try.

The frame to my cm200t has a crack up near the neck...
I'm still debating whether to part it out, or make a go-cart out of it.

BTW... what parts you looking for?

well i don't know yet. i bought the bike for $150. It was leaking oil, the clutch cable was broken and minor electrical problems. It starts that is all i know for now. I won't have enough time to look at it for another 2 months. i guess for now I will definately need new gaskets and a clutch cable.

I'm pretty sure everything will fit, but not everything works.
The 185 came in 6 volt and 12 volt so as long as your not buying a used generator you should be fine.
All of the 200's were 12 volt

Not that I'm doubting you, but I was given a total basket-case CM200 with a locked up engine and in my quest to find a new engine, I found that while MOST 200s are 12-volt, the first year were 6-volt, at least according to teh intarwebs. I have a first-year and hence am stuck trying to find a 6-volt engine or a 185 engine.

Does he have the engine? Does it run? Is he willing to part with the engine?

Oh, it's complete (and in really good shape, too, acually), and he says that it ran when he put it up. It's a little run down now, though. But, he keeps theatening to "get it fixed up for Mother... or one of the kids..." All it really needs is a battery, carb kit and a couple of cables replaced to get it running.

All the 185 are 6 volt and some of the 200's?
I dont remember, been at least....... (hell, I dont even remember the las time I SAW one)
A least I remembered that they came in 6 and 12v

No worries. Actually, I was hoping you'd be right because it would make finding an engine a LOT easier.

Does anyone know how hard a 12v conversion is if I come across a 12v engine? Or could I take the 6v generator and parts off my existing engine and put them on the 12v engine?

I wouldn't think that it would be terribly difficult to convert from 6 to 12. I know my father has an old tractor that he converted. One little thing to keep in mind is your lights. make sure all the bulbs can handle the 12.

The bike is a no-title, pseudo-off road "Mad Max" bike. No lights or instruments. Just a toggle switch for the ignition.

In case you're interested. my neighbor is moving and plans on selling the bike. Someone has already offered him $300 for it. He said yes, but he's the type of guy where if you offer him $400, he'll give the other guy his money back.

And it is a 6 volt.

switching from 6v to 12, all you have to do is plug in rectifier, ( original will probably work but may burn out , generator output voltage is higher) new 12 v battery and change all the bulbs. 6 v will burn out pretty quick

This info is not correct. I own a '78 CM185T and I am in the process of converting it from 6V to 12V. The stock CM185T is a single phase stator unit and does not produce enough AC voltage to rectify to 13+ volts. Merely plugging in a new 12V rectifier does not work, I did test it just FYI. You have to replace the stator unit with a beefier unit off an 81 CM200 or newer bike. Also, the 6V systems utilize the headlight switch to bridge the circuit which allows the AC voltage to increase on the factory rectifier (it is a rectifier only, no regulator) when the headlight is on so that it maintains 7.2 to 8+ volts. However, from my measurements, this is only with throttle applied. At idle, the battery is draining from the accessories (lights etc.) being on.
