fun with carbs!
« on: November 02, 2018, 08:52:33 PM »
I found an old 750 K0 to play with. I cleaned the carbs and thought I did a good job. #1 leaks out the overflow. I cleaned them again polished the seat with a q tip, re-checked the float levels by measuring again, still leaks, trimmed the bowl gasket where it protruded into the bowl area, leaks. Straightened the float, checked for fuel in it, leaks. Blew into a fuel line while opening and closing the float, works fine, put it back together, leaks. looked at the needle and seat, see nothing wrong but AHA! the overflow tube has a crack right at the bottom where it goes into the white metal. Got a different float bowl, annnnnd yes. It leaks out the overflow.  The clear tube shows the float bowl level 3mm below the gas cap, Is that close?
I'm laughing my ass off as I type this. I love a challenge and tomorrow I'm installing all new needles and seats. And probably another different float too, I'm stubborn and want to use brass floats.
Actually the needles appear to be incorrect for early carbs. Too bad three of them work great.

My wife says I smell like gas. Huh.

You need to go out and buy some of that new unscented non-leaky gas...lol !!!

Seriously though, I always like a good challenge and I’m sure you do too !!!  Best of luck getting it sorted .

Try removing the bowl, lightly clamp in vice so it is level and fill it with gas. Watch it and see wherer it leaks from. Then clean and  "paint" the leaking area with a few drops of clear nail polish. One of mine was leaking from around the seat of the inside of the boel where the overflow tube seats. Polish did the job.

I have enough parts to try new ones until I have a different set of carbs and that could happen today. Except one drain screw, I'm short one.

I pulled the carbies one more time and the #2 pilot jet was plugged tight, Apparently I missed it or it re-plugged after I cleaned it. I used the set of needles and seats I already had and rechecked the floats, the 4 floats are all slightly high but I left them for now since it's on pod filters. It started up, #2 warmed up and cleaned out. #1 dripped one more time then dried out so I took it for a short ride. It has all of the gears, shifts nicely but needs neck bearings. It has a notch in the neck straight ahead and feels really odd when turning slightly.

135's and 42's  I baffled the inside of the pods with rolled oil bottle plastic. I covered 2/3 of the pleat but it still will feed my shop vac with little notice.  The theory is it will straighten out the flow entering the carbs, I doubt the sharp edge inside the pods will allow that. I have a sandcast airbox but it has a home already. Playing with the pods seemed like fun but eventually they'll get retired.

I re-set the timing on 2-3 and checked the dwell, the carbs are working well now, I have a small rpm waver, helped by going to one turn out on the idle screws. There may be a vacuum leak. At any rate this thing runs sweet. I'm hoping for good weather tomorrow so I can take it for a longer ride.  I'll set the valves and timing chain tensioner and then it's on.
