I just checked and I wasn’t able to locate any notches for a wedge. Is that just a 550 thing? Also I was able to unbind the cake chain by using the hex on the points and reversing the crank a bit. Maybe I can use the propane torch my roommate uses for smoking weed  ::)

Can anyone say how you translate "130mm" oil level into volume? I bought a syringe for this purpose (adding correct oil quantity). I'm just not sure what they mean here.

On all modern bikes they give the oil quantity and the oil level, measured from the upper edge with the forkleg compressed and without spring.

So the “empty” distance from top of oil to top of fork tube? Thanks!

After much delay created by my all balls kit, I finally have a roller!

I also got an almost complete spare engine that I plan to use the cases from. So the plan is now to turn this “light winter resto” into a full resto including full engine rebuild and vapor blasted cases/etc. I have debated it a bit but I think i will get new gauge faces and turn my odo to zero. I’ve always waodnered what it would be like own one of these bikes from new, so I figure if i’ve Rebuild the engine all the way, I’ve earned it.

Wow it has been a long time since I updated this post. Well I am getting near the end here (I hope) so I want to update. I started a separate thread for the engine rebuild as I had a lot of questions. The thread is here.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,179579.75.html

Since last posting here I have assembled the bike 95%, to the point where only the engine is needed (and other parts that would be installed after). I have refinished just about everything and reinstalled. I also rebuilt the gauges, with new faces. The look of the new gauges and the controls, everything up front that you look at while riding being so clean, that is my favorite part of the project so far. Can't wait to ride a like-new bike for the first time.

Last week and last night I made a big effort to start rebuilding the engine and I think I will be able to put it in the bike tonight or tomorrow if I don't have any hangups. so i am pretty excited about that. The whole engine has been vapor blasted and all the parts going inside are new.

Thanks guys. Sorry about the bad photos posted yesterday. Here is a better one. The lower end is ready to go after assembly, realization of grave mistake, disassembly, and reassembly. On the bright side I can assemble the transmission from memory now ;) I broke a piston ring today while installing otherwise I would have the top end on too. Tomorrow I will get the side covers filled, wired, and buttoned up. Literally EVERYTHING is ready to go on the bike including polished and rebuilt carbs, just need to finish this engine!

In the last couple months I got a lot of help from members here and came up with a comprehensive list of parts for the engine rebuild. Seeing as the bike was complete and ready to go besides an engine, I focused on that part of the project while the rest of the bike waited. I asked a lot of questions about the rebuild in various threads but I'll try to keep further progress here for anyone who likes 400s and is interested.

In the meantime something interesting did happen and I got another bike that ended up having cam chain tensioner issues. It was a pretty clean bike otherwise and I was sad to find out that I screwed up and bought another bike that needed an engine rebuild. but I did get to harvest some nice parts from it while I had it, like a brand new exhaust system which I assume is from DSS, and the center stand lift handle. Here's a pic of that exhaust next to mine. I swapped mine onto the bike and sold it. You can check out that bike here if you want. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,179667.25.html

Nice score on the exhaust.  Those DSS replicas are $$$$.
