74 cb450 help
« on: November 06, 2018, 12:34:45 PM »
So i'm banging my head on a bike i'm working on.  I'm working on a 74 cb450 and it's fighting me.  Guy is on a budget and we are at the top of it already.  Came in with a completely dead battery and a stuck float.  So carbs are spotless, carbs are synced, float level set, oem float needles and when taking it out, when you get to about 1/2 throttle just falls on it's face and won't pull out of it.

Doesn't matter if it's cold/warm, applying choke slightlly, with or without the filters.  I have not done anything with the ignition side as my head kept saying it's got to be fuel related.

So logically ignition is next up right?  i was going to check timing, and that advance is working.

Thoughts?

By all means set the gap/timing (they're interrelated on a 450).
Make sure that advancer is working even when hot.

Those are CV carbs IIRC. Check for small splits / air leaks in the carb diaphragms.

Thanks guys for the tips.  One thing to add is, it's only with a load on it, with no load, it's working fine on the stand.  I'll dig into timing tonight.

What color are the spark plugs showing you?
