What do you guys think of this 1969 cb175
« on: October 28, 2018, 04:30:34 PM »
Kind of cute little early CB. Considering to buy and revive it. Liked it a lot. Seller wants me to make an offer, not sure therefore would like to ask what should I offer if at all it is recommended to buy.
Thanks

Need left muffler, control cables, tyres, kick starter, battery and seat cover. Fires up but a good carb cleaning and 3k miles tune up that’s all I think for it be road worthy.

Not sure how much I should offer

The total for those parts is a good size chunk of money.  Is it the kick start lever of gears?   Friend bought a similar bike but better cosmetic condition for 600 if that means anything.  Nice around town little commuter bike...Larry

You won’t see too many of those around.  Looks to be in reasonably good shape but pictures generally look a lot better than actual condition.  Is the tank discoloured on top around the cap or is that just lighting/reflection?

Pricing can vary for any of these older bikes.  Depends a lot on the local market.  Did you approach the buyer or is he/she approaching you?  Have you heard it running?  Compression check?  Runs through all the gears?

As a reference, I sold a very good condition ‘75 CB200 with approx. 14K miles on it for $1850 Cdn (certified) about 5 or 6 yrs ago.  That’s in your market (GTA) and the buyer came from Stouffville.

If you’re buying it to fix up and flip it, you might not get back what you put into it unless it’s an absolute steal and you turn around and find the right buyer.

Check parts availability also.

One of my early bikes was a '71 SL175 and my dad later found a '70 CB, so we had a pair.

Down in my area of the US (Chicagoland) I would think maybe $1,000

My first new Honda was the 1972 CL175. It was a fun bike. If you are tall you may feel a little cramped. It looks like a good project to me. If he wants you to make an offer he must want you to fix it up. Bet you could get it at a good price. I would not go $1000 for it as by the time you get it all fixed up you will over price it. See if he will jump at $500 and work the price from there.

It's a toy, but looks good.  I have a couple "toys" and find myself not riding them more than a quick spin around the block.

$500 would be a good deal...

Thanks all
Seller wasn’t ready to go below 1000$ and with all the replacement parts, work involved and on top of all this NO OWNERSHIP, I walked away.

Now considering a big sister of same bike, at least it will be something that I could ride on short distance rides. It’s a 1969 CB350

Steve-o is right, these are toys, good to pamper a child inside. Keeps the lighter side alive.

If anyone has pair of CB350 mufflers, I’ll need

Cheers

Nice looking 350. The same guy that sold the 175 is seeking one of those. A 350 can certainly be taken on long rides. It's not very fast (not like the 400f) but it is capable. I've ridden my dad's CL350.

I had the CL350 version of your CB. My brother had the 1971 CB version. Both were capable of over over 100 MPH (his a little more), and all-day freeway touring BEFORE the speed limit dropped to 55 MPH here. They also last about 25k-35k miles with good oils before a top-end overhaul and new clutch is needed. Tough bikes!

The CB175 is the design that became the CB750 SOHC engine. Same volumetrics, timing, cam, all of it! You can run those bikes WFO all day long and they will not even break a sweat. Once in 1972 I rode across South Dakota (westbound) on my 750 and met a fellow on a CB175 in eastern SD who was going the same way I was. I rode 90-100 MPH, he said he was running WFO at 80-86 MPH and he had more load on his bike than I had on mine, by a stretch! I camped at 6 PM in Wall, and about 2 hours later, here comes the 175: he camped with us. On the way back a week later, I met him again: he was still traveling the same overloaded way, flat-out all the way, but going almost 90 MPH because of the westerly tailwind. Indestructible, those bikes...

My SL175 was my 2nd street bike after my little Suzuki 80. At 16 I only weighed about 140 pounds (at 6-2), so I wasn't making it work hard, but it would run at an indicated 60mph on the rural 2 lanes around my family's summer place for hours at a time. I wouldn't get 60mph out of one today, but it would still be plenty fast enough for running around town and even the short commute to work since I don't take the highway.
