630 Chain Riveting?

Ok, searched for a thread already on this, but found nothing. Got a new 630 for my '77 750 k1, got a tool off fleabay, said it could rivet 630. Such was not the case, it only did 530. >:( Any suggestions? homemade tools? Tips and tricks for riveting chain? Thanks in advance for any advice.  ;D

Buy the proper tool or take it to a shop. You don’t want to hafass the quality of this job.

indeed, I do not wish to half-ass the job.  Show me a link to the proper tool and I shall buy it! finding the tool is my problem.

Ok, but that looks like it only does 530, that's my trouble. I can't seem to find one for the bigger 630 chain. might just have to take it to a shop like you said.

Just take it to the shop this time.
 Then when the 630 wears out, toss it, and switch to 530  for ever.

Yeah, 630 is a bunch of dead weight that doesn't contribute to strength. 530 is thy way.

Have you considered fitting an O/X-ring 630 split link?

I have had one on my Z900A4 for the last 3 years without any problems, correctly fitted  they are fine, but clearly a personal choice.

Literally no way a removable master link is weaker than a riveted one. If you are worried about the clip coming off, just a few wraps of safety wire around the outside plate and the clip and it won't be going anywhere. Makes servicing the chain far easier as well.

I know you will not want to hear this but here is the truth.

The #630 chain was a very heavy chain. Many CB750's had the chain break and go through the engine case right in front of the countershaft sprocket.
You will see many CB750's with repairs to the case in the area of the chain.
Get rid of that #630 chain and sprockets. Use #530 chain and sprockets.
The 1978 CB 750's had a thicker engine case in the area where the engine cases were getting broken.
Another of the 22 improvements the 1978 CB750 had.
Now chains are much more improved and manufactured and problems like that do not happen.

Even 530 chains are too heavy for the modern bikes with >3x Hp than stock CB750. Modern chains are much stronger than chains for 30-40 years ago.

Thanks for all the input! I much appreciate all your replies. Those kits are all a little steeper than I was hoping to see, I'll probably take 754's advice and take it to a shop this time. As to the durability of chain, this bike wont see a whole lot of miles - that's what the shaft-drive shadow is for...
