Topic: Hard luggage for CB750K5

I've done a few trips with soft bags on my bike. They work fine, but I have to put covers on them if it rains, and I'm never totally confident just walking away from them unsecured. Hard bags seem rare for these things as they are all vintage parts... Anybody else had luck finding somebody currently making them new? Or is it easier to use some standard hard cases and have a custom mount built?

You need the mounting frame with them, very important.

They arent that hard. Look for Bates, Shoie, Vetter, and Hondaline. Search eBay and Craigslist for bags from 70's Japanese bikes .

There are a few out there, but most of what I see are for later CB750s. Will they fit earlier frames?

These are excellent: I have their predecessors on mine. I had to make my own mounts for the hoops, not hard to do, and cross-linked it to the taillight mount for stability. They flex when riding (which they should) to reduce input to the handling, and detach easily.

I dont think i have ever put bags or a back rest on without having to make some custom brackets.  I dont know if you will find any bags that have everything you need and just bolt it on?

I think you are right. I have been chasing an impossible dream! I am not a fabricator myself so I'll have to call around and get some estimates.

All that is needed with the Krausers is:
2 short 3/4" wide (steel) straps to bolt the top front about 3" behind the tiop shock mounts (one each side).
2 longer 1/2" wide (steel) straps to go from the lower front corner of the mounts, a bump around the shocks, to the rear footpeg's bolt(s).
1 U-shaped strap between the top rear corners of the frames, across the rear fender, bolt into the rear fender or taillight mount bolts.

I'll see about taking some pix of mine to post here...

Krauser was the brand in the 80's. Almost luxery

 I used black Shoei with chromed tubing. Not removable bags but possible to have a plastic bag inside to ensure no leaks and take everuthing out.
I gave them away 9 years ago since the look rusty and crappy. I regret that now, I should have restored them. I have  3 "newer" Giwi I bought slightly used 1988.
I found NOS wingrack with blinkers (USA)  and NOS universal brackets (Italy) a few years ago. I realized that these had to be of a very early type.
I'll might use it one day.

For most common permanent mount bags, all you need to do is cut and drill one or 2 steel straps to the appropriate length.
3 point mounting:
1. Top rear shock bolt
2. Seat rail or fender mount bolt
3. Rear footpeg to bottom of bag frame.

krauser is the vay to go..easy to klick of the holder and take them vith you leaving the bike...tons of them in Europa

I am not sure what year it was, just a set of second hand cases, here on CBX750 somewhere in Austria.

There is Vetter hard bags as well. They by comparison look very unorthodox in their angular shape.

Pop open the doors and look at them from behind and you have a gull wing...  So, Vetter gives you Wings!

Devolving into a top load vs side load thread

Top load.....cram everything in that will fit, and it stays in when you open the lid on the bike.

Side load....try to cram everything in that will fit, as it keeps falling out at the same time....open it up on the bike and it all falls into the road!

Detachable Side Load......good for carrying clothes into the motel room

Top Load......good for everything else!

For my Vetter I am having a set of soft bags made of a strong nylon or canvas I can stuff things into and still get them in and out loaded. Using velcro to secure them into the bags. Vetters are removeable side load bags.

Over the (35+) years with my much-abused Krausers, they warped slightly on on of them, letting water get inside during heavy rain rides. I shot some Naughas and made some Naugahyde liners for the bags one fine summer weekend, solved it handily without adding even 1 lb to the whole setup. I then discovered they kept the exhaust smell out of my clothes in the bags, too! The Krausers, with their injection-molded aluminum frame, are the lightest of all hard-side types that I know of.

 I saw some cbx factory bags for sale recently, I'm betting they would adapt easily but are probably rare to find for sale.
