 So I sat this gas tank on a chair on an orange fender cover to look inside to see how bad the rust is. And I can see the orange fender cover through the bottom of the tank. Now, I know the tank had gas in it. How can that be? How could the bottom have just fallen out? I look again and it's orange, it must be some kind of tank liner or goop somebody put in it. With a better light, it comes into view. It's an orange spoon someone lost into the tank.

 It's a large two tablespoon size measuring spoon, I got it out but now I smell like bad gas.
  I'm going to do the lacquer thinner rinse then pressure wash it to get the loose junk out followed by muratic acid, soda water to neutralize the acid and then alcohol to dry it. A dab of gas and synthetic 2 stroke oil will preserve it.  I'll need to let it sit inside the shop, the acid doesn't work well in the cold. Maybe a light bulb under it to keep it warm.

  It's more obvious in the pic with the camera flash but the flashlight made it appear the same color as the fender cover. I can't remember ever spooning anything into or out of a gas tank but I'm tickled it didn't melt in there.

 I just realized, the directions for the gas additive probably said add two tablespoons to every tank full.

 HA! It's a good possibility. Like when my daughter was drawing with a ball point pen in the car using the console for a desk. I figured she might poke a hole in the vinyl so I asked her not to do that and use her Moms purse instead. Of course she drew directly on the purse.  Now someone bake me a pie.

Kinda looks like a measuring spoon from an old Tupperware measuring spoon set.

If Mom's purse is vinyl and not painted test some gojo on the bottom to see if it removes the finish of the purse? Hair spray might remove it safely too... Or try WD-40...it is a pretty good degreaser.
If it is leather, saddle soap and lots of scrubbing....tell you wife she might want to like the distressed look, or take it to an artist who can turn it into something unique... 
SEM makes a good vinyl paint...


My daughter is a tall young lady and was growing up and she is artistic like her parents. Well, she was also individualistic and would draw on her hands and arms with sharpie pen. She drew an ornate looking ivy on her arms and hands up to the elbows once and was asked by the server who did her tattoo that it was very cool. It did look cool. She had to pop the bubble of the server deflating her hopes of finding an artist with the tattoo gun. My daughter turned 30 last week.  Still no tattoos, she doesn't believe in them, as far as I know that is still true.

I tried to find some wrenches in the septic tank once. Saw my two -year-old boy with one in the yard one day and asked him what he was fixing.  Said he was going fishing in this hole; "Hear the water down there?" Glad I didn't pick up THAT smell!
