Where to purchase a Genuine Honda Key cut for your bike?
« on: November 28, 2018, 12:13:49 pm »
When I bought my bike (1975 CB400f), I unfortunately received an ugly locksmith key. I'd like to replace it with a genuine honda key, but I can only find Genuine Honda blank keys OR a place that will cut the correct key, but with an aftermarket key (see link below). Does anyone know where I can get both (genuine key and cut) or do I have to buy the blank and get the key cut at a local locksmith?

Try www.hondakeys.com  I have got a few and they are OEM.  If you can read the number on the key you are in set.

Honda never sold blank keys as far as I know, you bought the key precut using the key code number. So if all you have is a copy with no number... ?
Some models have the number on the ignition or seat lock but not all.
Hondakeys.com is the place to try, or maybe an long time Honda dealer near you has a dusty box of old keys somewhere though. Honda dropped a lot of local dealers a few years back to boost their Powersport stores though...
There were actually very few keys for these bikes... I've heard the early 750s had 7 different keys. If you can find that dusty box of keys and start trying them you may get lucky.

Search on eBay on the Honda key number. Number might be visible on the switch since you have not a real Honda key.

So if you have a emgo switch, you can't get a blank that says Honda on it to cut?

Honda did not sell blanks back then, probably they do now for new vehicles that hopefully have a bit more key security.
To have a little bin for every key for every Honda bike model in the 70's, a shop only needed a few feet of shelf space. There were very few different keys: if you tried your CB750 key in another CB750 it had a 1 in 7 chance of working.

I tried multiple times to get ahold of the honda-key guy this spring (about a weird key I had) and I never heard back from him.

I tried to contact him a few days ago using his website form, still no reply...

I reached out for keys multiple times in the spring. So maybe, if it's a 6 month vacation.

He could be retired now, or health issues have him unreachable.

I ordered keys from cyclekeysonline (on ebay) 8/6/2019 and received them 8/8/2019.  They have the same head shape/size/color as OEM and they work perfectly for my '78 CB750K, stock ignition switch. Priced about $10 each. Will use him again if I need more keys.

E-bay is the best place to get the blanks and after that you can cut it down either by a locksmith or by the dealer.

Check first - my local locksmith won't cut keys from customer-supplied blanks.  Something to do with not knowing what kind of metal they're made from and concerns for his cutting equipment.  Sounds sketchy, maybe, but his policy is fine with me: I went in there asking for key copies for my '77 CB400F and my 2000 Kawasaki W650 and not only did he know off the top of his head which key blanks he'd need for each of them... but he had them both in stock!
