Pickup truck bed covers while hauling a bike
« on: December 02, 2018, 04:22:23 AM »
Not strictly a bike question but I thought I would see if anybody out there has a solution. I am looking for a pickup truck bed cover that is reasonably secure for storing tools and luggage, but will fold or roll out of the way enough for me to load a bike in the back. What I don't want to do is have to remove the entire bed cover every time I load a bike. I also can't bolt my wheel chock farther back from the front because my bikes just fit on the bed as it is. Does anybody know of a type/brand that fits these parameters? Not stupidly expensive would be a plus!

Dunno about you yanks but here in Australia we have tough fabric covers called tourneaus
When I load a bike up in my Hilux I just roll it up and tuck it against my rear window, still see heaps out the back.
Extreamly tough and water proof.

Many choices depending on how much you want to spend...

I saw the Tonneaus; I was a little worried about the security of the vinyl only covers. I don't think they are locking and could probably be slashed open with a knife easily, right? On the other hand, I was worried that the aluminum/vinyl BAK wouldn't roll up small enough for me to get the bike wheel flush up against the front of the bed. Anybody hauled a bike with the BAK rolled up?

There is really no way to make a secure bed cover. They do hide what's inside and make theft a bit more difficult than reaching in an open bed and grabbing something. If a real thief sees what you have and wants it ... byebye.
So you're stopping casual theft by people who have no qualms about stealing low hanging fruit, or addicts who need something - anything - to pawn. I think the prime use of a bed cover is to get a reasonably dry cargo area without the "soccer mom" stigma that comes with a minivan or the hassle of a full size van that won't fit in most parking structures.
Professional thieves - meaning they live off the job - don't crack open truck beds hoping to find something worth stealing. They find out where valuables are and then get them. The typical locks on truck bed covers are a moments work to pick open for even a neophyte lockpicker. Most cars or trucks can be opened in minutes with no evidence or damage, in seconds by breaking a window.
So don't worry, be happy.
How often do you carry a bike or other large items? Hard shell covers come off fairly easily with two people but need a spot to store it. Roll ups have major leak problems so if you need the bed go be dry that is not great. Tonneaus keep weather out pretty well and are easiest to open up.

Probably just as easy to steal the truck and the bike, than to take a few things out of the back..

I've been known to cable lock my ramps and gas cans to the tie down lugs. Maybe a small bolt in tool box? Sorry, that's all I got. I put a sectioned sliding bed top in my sisters truck. It was always broken, I really got sick of fixing it and it still covered the first couple of feet even when it was open.

Check out AUTOANYTHING.COM I bought a nice vinyl type from LUND from them, but they have a huge selection of roll-up and fold-up high security types to choose from.....bring a fat wallet since those hardened type aren't cheap.

Eh you can never really secure stutf, Ive never had anyone steal stuff from the back, most the stuff in there right now is too heavy to pinch on your own!

I have had a Bakflip for the last 5 years or so. It's easy to fold out of the way when carrying a bike. It can also be removed simply/quickly by removing 2 thumbwheel-type screws if the bike is too long with the cover installed. Once the bike is unloaded, it's a 2 minute operation to reinstall the cover.

It's not really secure in any serious manner but in the time I've had it, I've never had anything taken. There have been many times where tools and materials have been there. But so far, the fact that the cover keeps the things out of sight has been enough.
