Gsx-r front end conversion on a 1980 cb650c
« on: December 03, 2018, 10:27:34 AM »
Over the past few months I’ve been converting a 1980 cb650c into a cafe racer. I’m getting close to finishing it and want to put a 2005 gsx-r600 (i have a whole parts bike) front end on my project. I’ve done some research and found conversion bearings through all balls racing. My only question is would i be able to get away with just buying the bearings? Or would i have to buy a new stem as well? It’s around $180 from Cognito for a new stem and bearings and am looking for a cheaper route. Basically is there any way around buying a new stem? Or do I have to dish out the whole $180 for everything?

Anyone with a lathe that cuts metric threads, should be able to turn out a stem .
7075 would be a good choice,  but a bit harder to source.. easy to find shorter lengths on ebay.
If you don't have a mill you can grind the notch.

There is nothing cheap nor easy about this conversion. You need to work out every aspect before you just jump in. For all practical reasons, a modern USD fork conversion is not necessary for a retro bike and a lot needs to be done to get it right. You may be better off to go with a GL1000 swap as its nearly bolt on and still offers far superior handling and braking vs stock components.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

For someone who was giving this some thought over the last few months... I think I have now decided to spend my money elsewhere.

Thanks for clearing this up for me.

Only relevant if he wants spokes. Said he had a donor bike, so I think he might be using mag wheels?
If so, that means widening the swingarm will be required,  if he wants a matching set of wheels.

I have it done on my 550. I bolted the entire gsxr stem + triple + forks onto my frame. I wanted laced wheels so I bought the cognito conversion hub for it. Otherwise it's pretty straight forward.
