Hondamatic 400 stuck kick starter torque converter
« on: December 12, 2018, 01:22:45 PM »
Hi all
I am in the process of repairing a 1978cb400a. Neither kick starter or electrical starter would turn over the engine. Engine was out of the bike. I could move the starter gear slightly both ways. I dissembled the engine and found it had a bent starter gear and damaged starter clutch on the crankshaft.(Which I replaced). I saw no other damage to the crankshaft connecting rods or pistons. When I assembled the crank, pistons and cylinders , the crank turned freely but was a little more stiffly than expected. I could not turn the rotor buy hand but could with a wrench
.
I re-assembled the kick-starter and the inner right cover. It moved freely and returned properly. Once I installed the torque converter I could not turn the engine over with the kick-starter. But I still can turn the engine with a wrench but it is very difficult.

Any suggestions on how to fix this will be appreciated

Thanks Bill
