1982 cb650sc rear shocks...rebuildable?
« on: January 19, 2007, 11:40:14 PM »
I have two sets of rear shocks and they are both spongy (at max setting) and won't allow me to have a passenger so I was thinking of looking into rebuilding them (or having someone do it for me) or buying a new set.  progressive ones are way too expensive and I have been trying to find slightly cheaper ones to no avail...

any opinions or ideas?

DK had some in the 05 book for a 79 750 that looked good.   Might be little longer.  Trying to get around to checking further if they still have them.    Just checked and they are no longer available.

JcWhitney has some shocks listed for my bike but they don't have a name brand, AND the picture is of shocks with eyes on either end when mine is eye/clevis style...

Hi Guys,

My rear shocks seem to have completely failed last night on my way home. :(

The springs are fine, and I checked that it wasn't just the adjustements, all that is in place.

I heard some weird pinging noises... I'm worried that the springs in the hydraulic part of my shocks may have broken on the crappy Montreal roads.

When I get on the bike, I can hear air rushing out of the rear shocks. They compress all the way down. Then when I get up, the shocks don't decompress. Instead, if I pull on the rear grab-bar, the back raises easily, and I hear a similar 'whooshing' air noise. As far as I can tell, the problem is dead shocks... :(

Is this something that needs to be purchased new? My Clymer says 'you can't rebuild rear shocks.' Is this true? Any ideas? I *WAS* planning to drive to Ann Arbor to be with my wife on Monday. This is not good at all.

Thanks!
Francis

Hey,

I don't know how much you're wanting to spend, but I picked up a set of Hagon's for under $200 from David Quinn.  That's cheaper than Progressive w/ springs.

I upgraded to the progressives and they are VERY nice.  a little expensive but I get a AMA discount at my local honda dealer so it wasn't too bad.

I have two pairs of chrome 1982 cb650sc eye/clevis style shocks that worked ok for single rider weight but sucked for passenger weight.  If you are looking for something to at least get you through short term I could part with one or both of these sets if theyd work for you.  I dont think they would reach you in time for your trek on monday without shipping being ridiculously expensive

As a follow-up to my previous post of suspension despair...

My mechanic specializes in motocross bikes, and he knew of a less well-known brand with a model that looks distinctly different, but has the proper double-eye shocks for my bike. I ended up paying 125$ for the pair, shipped in 3 days. I rode them from Montreal, to Ohio, to Ann Arbor, and though they're black and only single-adjustment, they are holding up really well, and quite comfortable. They've also held up well with my wife as a passenger. Unfortunately, I forgot the box in Montreal, and mounted them with the brand name on the inside of the suspension. I'll check the brand when I have a chance...

And I should mention that I really appreciated rab1dwolf's kind offer of parts (sorry for not courteously replying earlier... it's been a bit wild). You guys are awesome!

Francis
