The movie "They shall not grow old" is well worth a watch also.

Those poor #$%*'s thought it was going to be an adventure. I suppose it was if you like your adventure to be at the bottom of a cess pool. I met a few of them when I was sent to Sunnybrook hosp for surgery to my horn, there they were in 1958, gas attack survivors and they couldn't leave their ward, no bikes, no girls/wives, no booze, some #$%*ing adventure. Be really careful girls to make sure the politico's don't start to beat the drum, if they do kidnap a few and bring them along, to make them understand what they are doing.

That's some awesome stuff. I have a interest in WWI, my grandfather was a doughboy and somehow survived that war and lived into his 90's. I remember seeing his uniform hanging in the closet when I was sent to the farm to work during the summers.

Thanks for putting this up Kev. There is plenty I don't know about WW1.
I hadn't known about the Vimy Foundation.
I have only known for a short while that my great uncle has his name chiseled into the memorial there at Vimy.
I'm hoping the traveling display comes to Windsor.
I will look for Peter Jacksons film.
Not being Canadian puts me out of this info stream.
It's not the first time I have picked up on something from sohc4.

Bill, we have a battle hymn Glory, Glory, Hallelujah, advertising adventure. Remembrance Day is a quite a bit more somber.

Kevin D the reason it is more somber here I think is because in some ways we are a smaller country and because of the small population everyone knows of a family or their family lost some one, also the myths that have grown up here are different than yours we didn't have a revolution to make us a nation we had a butchery of major proportions that we won, a world war.
People might dispute that but I'd say to them our last province Newfoundland is an example 10% of the population served, 10 % it's said that the number of Newf's lost in ww1 destroyed a generation because of all the young men that died and has still caused the province grief as far economics goes. The rest of Canada teases Newfoundlanders but no disputes their guts and toughness.

I've spent more of my life than is healthy trying to understand the first world war. I'm giving up soon as I leave France still without a satisfactory grasp of both why it happened and how it could have lasted so long. I visited Verdun a few years ago (for the third time) and had depression for a week. There are still to this day vast tracts of land in Northern France that are uninhabitable (Zone Rouge: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_Rouge

I had the honour to meet many veterans back in the day, and all I have is respect in abundance. BTW, I never met any veteran who was a war lover . . .

No, no one I ever talked to in the "Wets" or when out, later, ever thought it was jolly even the guys that went through the "Camps" never thought it was any more than an extremely nasty and soul destroying job that had to be done and    ahh no more need to be said.

The movie seems not to be for general release here in US, only on December 17th and 27th. I also saw a listing for vudu.
