Now that I think about it there is a "Hat" pastrami place closer to where you are staying. I believe it is on Central Ave north of the frwy ( towards the mountains ).  Border line Upland and Montclair,  that is close enough to Ontario you could go for lunch.

Is the Peterson museum the NHRA one at the fair grounds? If it is then look for my neighbour's dad's car. It was a double engine (side by side) called Double Trouble I think. They built it so the motors would turn opposite directions. His name was Glenn Ward, he has since passed away. He was the Ward of Ward and Howard cams. There was talk of them (NHRA) putting it back together and display it there, I don't know if they ever did.

If you want to dip your toes in the water, see if the Wedge is breaking. It is an awesome sight when the surf is high. The Wedge is all the way at the end of Balboa Peninsula,  then you could either head up PCH to Walt's Warf  or hang around Balboa island.

The Peterson Museum is on Wilshire Blvd in LA.

Markb on this forum had one of his Sandcast bikes on exhibit there about a year or two ago.

I'd like to see both, we saw the Petersen a few years ago before the big remodel. We haven't been to the NHRA one yet.

Odd story, several years ago we went to the Winternationals, flew into San Diego and drove through the marinas north of San Diego, just following the beach and looking around. Later we saw on TV there was a desperate fugitive in the same marinas looking for a boat ride to Mexico. He ended up holed up in a cabin in the mountains.

We were delayed 7 hours at home by a broken jet, made a miracle 12 minute connecting flight in Dallas and made it same day. Lol. It's cool but warmer than home. We missed the freezing rain by mere minutes. Everything is cancelled at home. The kids will be in school until the middle of June.with all of these make up days.

Welcome to California  Don. San Gabriel mountains must have looked nice on your landing at Ontario.

Enjoy your stay and I hope the weekend weather report is wrong. I would hate for the races to be canceled.

Don, I don't know if it is still there but there used to be a really good steak house in Glendora called Pinnacle Peak. It is one of those places where if you wear a tie, they cut it off and pin it to the wall. The food was really good, but I haven't been up that way in years.

Also for some killer pastrami if you get a chance to go to a place called the Hat. I know there is one in Fullerton and that is just a short hop down the 57 frwy.

It's supposed to rain here sat, sun, mon, & tues. Weather has been low 60's day and high 40's to low 50's at night. From what you are leaving that is a heat wave!

Have a good and safe trip!

McClintock's in Pismo Beach and in San Luis Obispo if ever in the area, excellent Tri Tip Steaks!!!  Tri Tip is a great steak when done right and they know how to do it. McClintock name derived from a John Wayne character.  The old firehouse in SLO has a great tri tip sandwich.

Tucson AZ has a Pinnacle Peak's in a western town with some good live action skits, western gunfight and comedy skits pinnacle peak has decent steaks and good beans too, it is same kind of venue....did not realize it was a chain.
They nail them to the ceiling rafters in Tucson ...

Better to have a delay and a new plane than risk flying something that is not safe. A&P mechanics are taught what is or is not feasible to operate. Something as stupid yet essential as an inoperable toilet(s) will ground a plane.
Ever had them change a tire on a plane that you are on? I did once and it baffled me the pressure on that jack in a fully loaded 737 with full fuel load. That was a stout jack...

The ticket agent had to pick the chosen few to get the next flight. She got some grief from my fellow left behinders. I wouldn't enjoy that part of her job. Rain out today, finals tomorrow. That leaves tuesday to go to the beach.

It's a shame we had this rain now, I figured we would be seeing you in the pissed off thread. But if you have the time to stay for the finals, then that's cool.

So were you able to hit any of the local sites during the rain out?

No, nhra let us sit in the rain until a big storm was right there. We all got soaked making our way to the parking lot. I've hit a couple speed shops, went to driver photo day at the museum and listened to Shoemacher and Ivo tell about the early days. That was a hoot. They admitted a few fairly surprising things. Gangsters, drugs and stolen cars they couldn't recover because of gangsters. Women on the road and the hippy time of free love.

If you're coming to SoCal and bringing or renting a bike, look into the following:

Angeles Crest Highway (ACH). It's SoCal's version of the Dragon.  No green forest but beautiful twisties.

Palomar Mountain and Julian -- San Diego County mountain riding

Pine to Palms Highway (HWY 74) from San Juan Capistrano through the mountains to Lake Elsinore and then back up through the mountains and dumping out in Palm Desert

If you prefer straight roads -- PCH above Santa Monica traffic to Malibu and beyond and then return via the Malibu Canyons (twisties) including the Snake and an obligatory stop at the Rock Store Cafe

Carlsbad and Encinitas in Northern San Diego are excellent places to visit.  Laguna Beach is tourist heavy but also a great place to relax.  Anaheim, Orange and Long Beach (in Orange and southern LA County) are chock-full of speed shops.

All of those roads are entertaining in a car that isn't a slouch in performance...depending on what you rented will determine the level of fun you might have.
Hope the races came off well today and you had a good time.
Enjoy the beach and don't worry about that music you hear in your head of the theme for JAWS. Water is too cold to go in very long or very far without a wetsuit.

Despite the So Cal reputation of the beach fun the current is always bringing pretty cool to cold water into the area...

Sunset Cliffs at Ocean Beach is a sweet spot to look for the green flash at sunset.

Those old cans (can-tiques?) won't be missed; they've probably been there since at least the seventies and make nice mementos, at least we like the one on our porch down here in Carterville.

Hey Don, you forgot to take your rain storms with you when you left So Cal.

We are on track for 4 to 6 inches this storm.........that's almost the season total in one storm. Please take your rain back.

When I let it rain here it arrives frozen, either white and fluffy or clear and clingy. I hope the soil out there can handle the wet, we enjoyed driving around in the hills and admiring the ingenuity of the builders making a gulch into a building lot. I personally soaked up a gallon or so Sunday at Pomona. I imagine the officials in the warm dry tower saying, oh boy we better let the spectators go, they're going to get soaked in a few minutes.

Orlando FL is known for its evening deluges that are heavy and usually not too long lasting. Soak you easily a couple times over... Disney properties are packed until the showers hit.
