Woohoo! hi!

Hello all!  I thought the greenspun list was gone forever, but today I dug this place up!  :whew: thank goodness I have tons of questions, can't wait to start rummaging through the archives and littering up the tech forum ;D

After sitting for 5 years in a barn, my 72 CB500 has finally started running again!  These bikes are real troopers. Pulled the wheels off last night to get some new tires on it, and then it'll get a head to toe inspection, see how bad of shape everything else is in.

Anyhoo, delighted to see there's a community around for these bikes!

Thanks!  I can take a picture tonight, but it's a sorry state of affairs right now with no wheels or covers on, propped up on 3 stacks of lumber and 2 jackstands, haha.

There's got to be a proper way to hold up a bike with no wheels so it isn't such a hazard, what sort of stands do you guys use?  I feel as if I look at it the wrong way it's going to topple over and crush me :(

In the UK we have 'Paddock Stands' (don't know if it's the same name in the States) These just fit under the rear wheel spindle and then lift the rear wheel and hold the bike safely.

The center stand is the best for holding up the back end, and a length of 2x4 works well to hold up the front with one end on the ground and the other where the double-cradle frame tubes join up at the steering head. It's better to triangulate it (3 legs) as I've found with 4 legs it's actually less stable. Still, you don't want to go crazy on it trying to free up a stuck bolt or something...
