Good Morning from Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA
« on: December 27, 2018, 09:46:07 AM »
Long time listener, first time caller. I've recently purchased 2 non-running parts bikes (1975 CB750 and 1978 CB750) that I intend to frankenstein together for 1 bike. I tried to post some pictures but I didn't read the rules and I will not be able to for a bit, that's okay though.

I'm looking for some advice, I'm trying to rebuild the 1975 CB750 and the... cylinder head? (not sure if it's called that) has some broken fins, the 1978's does not. Are they compatible? Can I do a switcheroo and be okay?

I'm not very familiar with motorcycles but I'm very familiar with cars, my dad is a mechanic and owned a radiator shop in Albuquerque, NM for 20+ years and we would pick up a project car every year or so. So please excuse my ignorance in motorcycles, I've always liked them and I'm very willing to learn.

Welcome to the madness.

I'll let greater minds than mine chime in on compatibility but it's my understanding that the 72-76 models are all mostly interchangeable, but after 77 not so much.

Good luck. Looking forward to some pics when you get there.

It all depends on which models you have. You failed to mention that.

Jerry, that is probably some damn good information for you all to have.

Both are K-series so 1975 CB750 K-5 and 1978 CB750 K'78

Please ignore my earlier comment on pictures; I'm obviously wrong.

See pictures below for day 1 of bikes in garage. Red tank is the 1975, Blue/Black tank is 1978. The 1978 has a bent frame but the engine was running "recently" (which is what the guy said without being specific so I'm not sure how recent that is). The engine mounts are sheared off the engine though so that stinks.

Any advice is welcome.

They should interchange without problems.

You will notice a difference in the combustion chamber. No problem. The valve springs on the 78 are stronger and the valves are slightly different due only to the later keeper design. No problem. Definitely use the 78 K cam as it is a little hotter.

Thanks for all the help!

I've taken the 75 engine apart completely and I'm starting the cleaning/painting and will post updates on another thread.
