550 wiring to 750 engine
« on: January 19, 2019, 11:12:13 PM »
Hi everyone
Looking for some help with a question.. I have an old  1976 CB550 that is in pieces and has been left for a LONG time !! the engine is stuck but only because two plugs were pulled and left put.. anyway it’s a bit of a rough basket case and what I’m wondering Is I have an old 70’s CB750 chopper frame and motor with no wiring and electrical and want to know how much of the 550 wiring look could I use to run the 750 engine lights etc. or are they majorly different..

Thanks in advance for any help here.
Cheers
Scotty

It’s pretty easy to parse the loom and get certain circuits back together as the 2 models share some basics. But it might be easier to separate the loom entirely and run all new, simple circuitry based upon it being a “chopper”.

For instance, are you running front and rear indicators? Electric start? Dual gauges? A clutch safety switch? All these things are part of the standard loom, and the lengths, sub harnesses and what not may likely not reach in your chopper application.

Here’s a simplified diagram suitable to make an SOHC run

the components are the same: rectifier, regulator, coils, etc. use those parts and build a new simple loom with fresh wire and connectors.

Building a chopper as previously mentioned you may be "short" in a few places.
But the harness will run a cb550/500\750 as long as you ise the parts that matxh the harness. The only connestion i see needing spliced of the top of my head is your charging system will probably have a different plug but you can steal it off your donor bike for the 750 motor
