CB550K1 - stuck piston and pad in caliper
« on: February 02, 2019, 04:05:13 PM »
Trying to disassemble totally stuck pad and piston from caliper. I'd like to save pad, MC was leaking, did not had power tu push piston, compressed air did not worked too. Now trying to use penetrating oil. Any other  option? Not sure if problem is in the piston or pad or both.

Take a grease gun with flexible pipe and unscrew the nozzle from the end, the pipe will then screw into the pipe fitting on the caliper but only by a couple of threads, pump away and watch the piston come out

Years ago I pulled off an old caliper. Cut the bottom, metal pipe near its’ base and tossed it in a parts bin. A few months ago, decided I needed that one rebuilt. I unscrewed the bit of brake pipe and flair nut. Drilled out the pipe, then tapped the nut to a std. grease nipple. Clipped on my grease gun and the pad and seal pumped out smoothy! Wrap it in a rag to catch the bits, but never any drama! Much safer than comp. air........

If you’re trying to save the pad, stop pouring penetrating oil in the caliper. The pad will absorb the oil, and ruin the pad permanently.

Once out, sand the painted edges of the pad so that it slips in and out freely of the caliper.
This is true... Probably too late now

Ummm, that photo is not the hydraulic side of the brake caliper.

Pull the lynchpin above the pad and try again.

Non hydraulic end pad is worn out as it is at the same level as the caliper machined surface.

No, it IS hydraulic side with pad pressed in in jaw vise. This was the only movement I managed. I'll try next days trick with grease gun, I'm sure it will work!
Let you know result after

So, work done, what a great tip using grease gun! Unbelievable easy work! Issue was caused by corroded pad stuck in caliper. Thanks for the tip again!

Btw if not yet there this should be part of tips section

I’d forgotten about this post. I used the “grease gun trick” a few days ago. Scooped out the old grease with a popsicle stick and lubricated the exposed slides and guides on my old snow plow!
