Need a real waterproof rain suit. Any recommendations?
« on: January 27, 2019, 12:12:11 PM »
I got this one:

Coleman .20mm PVC/Nylon Rain Suit,Black/Tan,Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00363ZBCK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_g.GtCbQ5822RS

but it let the rain right in all over my butt/crotch area and there are no tares, which is strange. I guess it's somewhat permeable.

Anyone have a good reliable rain suit they can recommend?

I like Froggs Toggs! They make a set specifically for motorcycle riders, google them, they are well worth it.

I picked up a Joe Rocket rainsuit. It works well, but I'm usually behind a windjammer when I have it along.

Froggs Toggs are kept in the Wing trunk. They have never leaked. You can get them in bright colors for good visibility.

Consider waterproofing your shoes, mine got so wet going to Sturgis two years ago they dyed my socks brown. I was wishing I had left the windjammer lowers on it that day. You really can't wear overshoes, I'd think it would be a safety issue. I got a safety shoe stuck under the shifter once and fell over.

Upon spitting my coffee on the keyboard after this comment, …..+3 on the Frogg Toggs
After 20 years, my Sidi boots are still 100% waterproof, and I have never put anything on them but a wet rag.
AND, both the toggs and boots are breatheable

Yup, my work boots had the metatarsal guards over the top, it was a k3 750 with crash bars, and a windjammer. One of my co workers helped me get the bike up and get my foot out of the shifter/peg space. I began changing shoes at my workspace but that wasn't allowed so I changed shoes in the parking lot every day. I think my wet ones were Irish Setters. Not even water resistant.

I have a two-piece by Olympia.  I've worn it in torrential storms traveling across the US with no leaks or dampness.  The attached hood goes under the helmet and the neck wrap seals out any water that gets past your helmet/visor.  When everything is zipped and velcroed, you're pretty much bone dry.  I tried a one piece by a different company and found the fit to be too "European" for my build.  Apparently most Europeans are very slim.  Whatever you get, size it to fit over your normal protective riding gear.  If you haven't already, check out the Web Bike World site for reviews.  They provided a lot of helpful guidance when I was first buying gear.

I went shopping for a rain layer today.  Walking around wal*mart with the honda joe rocket gear got some looks.

Considered the frog toggs pvc for $30, but the seam stiching looked suspect.  The river frogg jacket didn't pass the wet thumb test.  Soaked it right up.

Ended up getting a new pair of leather boots for less than the froggs.  Those got a sno-coat treatment as soon as they were home.

Since Goodwill was nearby, I stopped in.  Just in case someone had donated a rain coat.  They did, just not a size large enough for me + armor.
What I did come up with was a waterproof sweater!  A thermal insulated waterproof underlay is better than nothin.  $7 for a last line of defense.  Should the can of kiwi camp dry I hosed the rocket gear with, fail.

I've had a pair of really solid rain pants since I was a teenager.  Used em during bicycle commuting, in pretty serious rains, and they work good.  I think they're helly-tech.  Been a while since I read the tag.  Despite the added girth over the past few years, they do fit over the riding jeans.

Those got a healthy dose of camp dry as well.

Okay thanks guys. This is proving to be tougher than I had hoped. But I think I've narrowed it down at least to one piece and "motorcycle" specific to ensure it's made to handle heavy rain while riding. Two piece has the risk of water getting in at the waist.

So I ordered this one:

https://www.motobuys.com/89-250-ser-ii-rain.html

Over $100 but it's a one piece(no waist leakage worry) and hopefully much more waterproof than this frog toggs I considered costing much less:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F173135936545

which I'm worried is more the quality of the last colemans one I got of similar price both of which have good reviews for motorcycle riding but also a few bad ones reporting crotch leakage.

So what do you guys do for hands and feet though? I saw some specifically made for riding on one site but a bit pricey. Any affordable boot covers and gloves anyone can recommend? Otherwise for gloves I'm thinking about just carrying latex gloves to stash with the suit I got.

You will eventually get wet in some spots. Having layers under your rain gear helps.

I've worn this for two days straight in pouring rain: https://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/large-yellow-rain-suit-combo-pack/A-p8638629e

Kept me warm and dry. I recently put a hole in the pants with my knife by accident, so now my butt gets wet. Time to buy some new ones! It is made for long-term outdoors use.

My general rule for outerwear (especially rain gear), is the cheaper you go, the more uncomfortable you'll be.

Also... If it wasn't LO-Vis, I would recommend military surplus. If you can find hi-vis stuff for air crews, etc... wear that.

Helley Haines I think is that brand used in commercial fishing but it's not really Moto gear. Neither is a mustang suit but that would keep you warm and dry submerged in a lake for a bit.

Charlie

Yeah I have used frog togs for a few years now. Had two solid weeks of rain in Alaska in 2013... wore em all day every day.  Nary a drop got through. Dries near instantly indoors, doesn't get hot like you're wearing trash bags.  Still have the same suit.
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.
