CB550F wiring harness questions
« on: February 19, 2019, 04:58:22 AM »
I have a '75 550F model frame I'd like to use on an upcoming project. I'm missing pretty much all of the electrical components; harness, controls, electrical panel, etc. I *think* I have the correct electrical panel that fits under the side cover, but it's empty.

I know the F model uses the junction box on the frame (and matching wiring harness) and the shallow headlight bucket. Other than that and the panel, all other components are the same as the ~'75-76-on 550K models, right? Handle bar controls, ignition switch, etc.?
I'm also pretty sure the handlebar controls are used on several models; 360, Goldwing, etc.

If I didn't use the shallow headlight,  I could use the later K model harness, correct?

Just trying to piece together enough electrical components for the main items, enough to make the bike run and get power to tail light and signals (which won't be stock).

And doing some of my own research,  isn't the key switch location and idiot light cluster different after the '75 model year?

I believe my frame is a '75, but there's no attachment point for the ignition switch down on the frame, I don't think.
It appears my frame uses the ignition switch up on the triple tree.

I think if I give up using the shallow headlight bucket I can use the more commonly available '75-78 K model controls and harness (yes, I know there are minor differences).
Heck, for that matter, I could use the earlier 500/550K parts, too. As long as it mounts the key up on the triple and not on the frame.

1975 and up, U.S. import, F models , switch and idiot lights are on the triple tree.

The early ignition switch fits into a bracket that bolts to a lug on the downtube under the tank

Yeah,  and the F model doesn't have that mount.

The harness is available new, as well as a couple of decent used ones online.
The controls are what I'm searching for now. I out up a Wanted ad.

Looks like these models are what I need:

LH control: 35200-390-671

 Used on '76-77 750F and '75-77 550F.

 RH control: 35130-377-670 or 35130-377-P00

 Used on several models.

 '75-76 360T
 '75-77 400F
 '75-77 550F
 '76.      550K
 '76-77 750F

Hi Scott,

While not a seasoned vet like most on here, I did want to caution you about part #35130-377-P00 for the RH switch assembly. The starter button in my OEM switch assembly was shot, so I looked around for the original Honda part but settled on pn#35130-377-P00, which I understood superseded the original part. While it functions as desired, I don't think the connections for the push/pull throttle hard lines are exactly the same. In my experience, the hard line that connects to the switch for the push cable had too much clearance where it connects to the switch body, which lead to some slop in the connection. I replaced my cables at the same time as the switch and compared them to the original ones that came off the bike and could not discern any difference, which leads me to believe I either got a bad part or there's something different about the P00 housing. Your mileage may vary. Good luck!
