Opinion needed on these wheels
« on: February 06, 2019, 05:11:40 PM »
I’m able get following wheels with decent tread on tyres. Would like to know if they will work on my 1975 cb550f, how are the perceived and look compared to stock spokes wheels and what do you guys think is fair price to pay?

Coming off a 73 or 74 cb750k
Thanks

The front bolts on to cb550 no problem as 500/550/750/gl1000 all use an identical hub.  The rear?...I think you would need custom wheel spacers and figure out a way to get a 550 sized sprocket (37t) that fits the 750 hub (commonly available 750 sprockets range from 46-48t)...so custom made rear sprocket would probably be the only way.

Henry Abe's are some of the best looking after market wheels from the '70's imo.  They were expensive new, and are expensive now, although values have somewhat descended from the lofty peeks of a few years ago.  I have never owned HA's, but they appear to be of similar weight and quality to other cast aluminum wheels of the era, so that means...comparable weight or slightly lighter than stock steel rims and spokes but wayyyy rounder, balanced, and will stay that way unless crashed into large immobile objects or ridden off cliffs.
If it works good, it looks good...

Many thanks Sean
Very detailed and informative response I must say.

Now luck will favour and someone who has done it will notice and respond to my post with a prescription to make these work.

Would it help if asked the seller to leave the spacers on ?

I was wondering HA Industries made it multi fit sort of wheel since they were selling these wheels for multiple models and there are extra holes for 550 sprocket mount?

You noted front wheel will bolt on right. How about speedo drive, will 550 drive fit on right? No spacer change needed in front I take?

I just liked these when saw and barely in a state to buy a 750 to avail wheels :)

Much appreciated

So 750 hub is wider than 500, so you may need to trim the sprocket holder to get back in line.
And or tweak the swingarm which angles your shocks slightly.
Spacers would probably need to get cut down or make new ones.
All doable.. helps if you know a machinist..

The wheels appear to be in very good cond, how old are the tires? (Date of manufacture is on the sidewall). If over 6-7 years old, they are worthless.

A good deal for wheels alone would be $500 US.   Buy them and a 750 and you'll be set!

You'll need the 750 brake backing plate too, I think. If those are 750 specific wheels.

I had a set of H.A.'s once. The rear was HEAVY. I still think vintage wheels are cool.

Around here wheels go for Cdn$5-600 a set. Lester’s worth most. The tires look new, if recent, ad $100-150. Speedo drive is the same, bolt on.

Could almost make out the date code on the front tire, maybe 2010 ??  If you can get them at a good price you should just grab them and put them away if your not converting them and wait till you get a 750 which is just a matter of time if your into Honda's 4's   ;)   :D

Thanks for very encouraging replies.

Tyres we’re mounted new in 2016 (however as you pointed out it appears to be end of 2010, which make it old )

I no longer have 750s. Last one sold in October 2018. Not sure if I’ll get an other 750 unless a great deal falls in my lap :)

Would want these to fit my 1975 cb550f (ideally)

I have swingarm off bike, may be I should try mounting wheel and if it fits then move onto getting a sprocket

The 550 speedo drive should work just fine.
