Tommy from Pa, 1978 CB750 F3

Hello builders!

I’m Tommy. I’ve been planning a build/restore/“get it roadworthy” for a couple of years now. It is a 1978 CB 750F3. I’ve done  few small things. I’ve decided to make a new electrical system. I’m going to do this using a motogadget m-unit and a few other new/after market items.

I’ve come across a problem with the starter motor. It runs just fine, however, the hot wire coming from the motor is exposed through the shielding about half way down. I’d absolutely love to replace it. I’m not sure I can. Any input for repair or replacement would be appreciated.

Tommy...... why not clean up the loose bits and cover it there with a larger piece of shrink wrap, the correct size?

Cleaning it up and wrapping the wire with tape and shrink is definitely possible. Butting it’s at all possible I’d like to replace the wire, i don’t think I’m able to though.

In the end it’ll be a kickstart bike so it’s not a huge deal I don’t think.

What effect does it have on your bike? None I'd suspect so don't worry about it. If you'd like just find another. No biggie.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Do you know of any after market options? It’d be nice to find a new replacement. I know I can find a used 1978 motor for $50 or so. But it would just be nice to find something new. Hence my desire to replace the hot wire.

Doubt there are any new ones...but a cb750 starter should be cheap and plentiful, as I have never had a bad one out of dozens...and 70-78 should all at least bolt in place and work.  I even think someone has used one from a more modern Honda as an upgrade for their high compression big bore
If it works good, it looks good...

I may end up just using some rubber electric tape and shrink wrap on the wire, and a dab of silicone on the rubber grommet where the wire enters the motor itself(to seal it). Then Clean up the termination and call it a day for now. It’s cleaned up and works just fine. Maybe an after market, permanent replacement will pop up in the future.

Like I said it’ll be a kick starter mainly.

Decided to just rape and shrink wrap the wire and silicone the connection at the motor for now. It’ll work well untill I find a suitable replacement.

The next plan is to decide where to put all the electric. I’m using a motogadget m-unit(basic), I have a reg/rec coming in and I’m planning on using the original ignition coils and starter.  The coils need to stay in their original location, under the front of the gas tank, I think. But the rest I’m hoping to put under the seat. However I’m worried I don’t know enough about suspension and hence how to/if I can avoid a big bump destroying a tire and/or the electrical tray I weld into place. Maybe using the battery box’s original location is best?
