turn signal suggestions
« on: January 17, 2019, 04:39:18 PM »
can anyone suggest turn signals that would be a direct swap without any modifications?  i think i've seen the euro market 750s with shorter more compact signals.  want them to fit the style of a stock looking bike but be a little more streamlined than the clunky stock ones i have.  thanks.

Yes, the K6 for Germany did have the smaller indicators. You can order originals at CMSNL, but they're a bit expensive or go for imitations like https://www.louis-moto.co.uk/artikel/honda-indicator-diverse-models/10033250?list=c8a41e1928c8fecc3a0a92ed1b6d3f00 or
https://www.polo-motorrad.de/de/blinker-oem-honda-cb-750k6-style-gerundetes-gla.html or
http://shopfourdeel.nl/licht/73/knipperlicht-duitse-uitvoering-honda-cb.html or
 https://honda4shop.nl/product_info.php?cPath=1023_901_149_222_593&products_id=151
The bigger (and ugly) indicators on later models was a marketing thing, just to make previous models look old.

Any two wire signal will work in the back with no modifications. The front 3 wire turn/running light is harder to find, but again, any 3 wire signal will plug right in.

I put an inexpensive conventional bulb 2 wire signal from Cycle Gear on the back of my 750F. I still need to source something for the front.

Of late, I have given up looking for nice aftermarket signals.  Just deal with the big ol' beautiful stockers...I have never seen anything that is close to the same quality, or they cost a fortune and look out of place.

Those 'big ol' beautiful stockers' just happen to be not anyone's taste. Personally I think any amber indicator makes a bike look cheap, plastic. I hated them from the moment Japanese bikes entered the world stage. Then Honda made them even uglier by making them bigger and on top make them double as childish looking running lights with the effect of turning a serious bike into some runaway toy from a merrygoround at a fairground. It's too late now, but tomorrow I'll post pics that show how simple you can give your classic bike class and at moderate cost.

If you still have the original turn signals, you could just buy shorter stems and swap them out.

I've used some small aluminum signals on a couple of projects. Most (but not all) aftermarket signals are two wire, so you lose the running light function on the front. The wire colors may not be the same, but they all have plugged right into the stock harness. You may have to get a modern electronic flasher relay, especially if the lights are LED. Those plug right up, too.

 Round style.

 Rectangular style.

De gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum, the old Romans used to say. This is what I got by just using the original lamps and stems. As mentioned before, I have always disliked the amber lights as I associate them with cheap and plastic. Not so much as the PO though; he had even removed the side reflectors and handed them separately in a bag when I bought the bike of him in 1980. On a trip in Indonesia I scored red and white lenses that are for the rest identical. BTW, a friend who liked the result when he saw mine, ordered similar from the States and Taiwan and it didn't even cost him much. I'm a bit old fashioned: lights in the front should be white and look like they are made of glass and those in the rear red. But... I judged that the combination white bulbs and white lenses maybe would not be as safe. Everbody is used to and expects amber indicators nowadays. Moreover next to the white headlamp white indicators maybe would not stand out enough, so I fitted amber bulbs. To say that I was satisfied, mwah... if you looked closely, the front indicators looked a bit like fried eggs sunny side up. I wanted my front indicators to be as neutral and modest as possible. New bulbs arrived on the market and they proved to be the solution. These bulbs appear white or chrome, neutral anyway, but burning they show the amber light everybody expects. Hurray, not only was I safe and streetlegal, but also I had managed to stay as close to the original as possible*. Especially the front has much more class now than before.
* Somebody told me that the CBFours for the Japanese homemarket originally had exactly what I had, but I don't know if this is true.

My ideal would be to have these (with white lenses ofcourse ;)) and then have them in the position of 4 and 8 o'clock for looks. Maybe Scott S has them there and I can't see it from this perspective. Neat modest little lamps.

scott, i bought some 2 wire one filament for the rear.  they work.  i haven't set up the fronts yet.  i bought 3 wire two filament for those.  in disconnecting the original fronts i only see 2 wires.  where would my 3rd wire go on the fronts?

Not all models had the running lights in the front.

have it solved.  was able to gain some insight from an old response of TT's.  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,126536.msg1439628.html#msg1439628

blacks from signals to ground all around.  up front the blacks (ground) from signals go to the open female 4 green (ground) wire connector where one of the green wires goes to the head light bucket nut.  there is a set for both sides.  whites up front from signals go to orange/white and light blue/white respectively.  reds up front from signals go to orange and light blue respectively.  in the rear reds go to colors orange and light blue.

in my quest to fit these new smaller signals i've run into a snag.  the problem is with the rear.  the newer signal stems while they are the same style they are smaller where they attach to the turn signal bracket.  the screw hole on the flange doesn't line up.  14mm diameter stem (that i had the ends turned down to 13 mm to fit the signals) as opposed to 22 mm diameter stem but i never thought about the fact that they wouldn't line up with the bracket as far as the flange goes.  photo below shows the issue.

i thought about drilling a new hole in the bracket and grinding off the welded on nut then just using a regular nut on the back but the new hole is only halfway off the old hole.  any suggestions other than looking to have new brackets made?  i ended up using the stems i planned to put on the front, on the back for now.  sorta looks half assed.  these are supposed to be honda replica stems so i imagine there is a bracket off another probably smaller bike that works but will they fit the brackets on the grab rail of my 750?  fukity fuk.
