Benelli SEI 750: Italian Super Bike
« on: February 08, 2019, 01:49:49 PM »
I only collect SOHC cb750s. A year ago, I heard of a woman that was selling her husband’s collection of unfinished motorcycles. He had two K0’s that were not complete. As I was building one for myself, I went to look. One was almost done, the other in crates. He also had a cl200 (never sold here in Canada), Suzuki GT550, 1975 CB750 USA drag bike (originally built by Orient Express), and a 1977 Benelli 750 SEI. The Benelli was almost completed. There was also about 60-65% of the parts for another Benelli (including another frame) and tons of NOS Honda, Suzuki and Benelli parts! I made her an offer for all the Honda bikes and bits, and suggested I could sort the Benelli and Suzuki parts into piles and give her an estimate of value.

Next day she called me back and told me I had offered her more for the Honda stuff than her husband’s “FRIENDS” were offering for everything. There was a hoist table, tools and equipment too! I addd $5k to may offer and she gave me everything!

It took me four trips with a pickup truck and a large trailer to get everything home. Lots of boxes I had never seen, were filled with more NOS parts than I’d imagined. It took me a year to finish his first K0, the GT550, drag bike and the CL200. I sold them all and passed on the second K0 to a buddy, for a very fair price.

The Benelli is basically a cb550 Engine, with two extra cylinders. It came with new BUSSO 6-6 pipes, and everything else to complete. As I worked on it, and did more research, I fell in Love! Then when I fired it up, it got worse! Sounds just like an early 70’s Ferrari F1 racer. Great ride, lovely handling and even better brakes. Put 6-700 miles on it last Fall and it will never sell. I just found the correct CEV turn signals and stalks, but I kind of like the CB750 units on the SEI. Ties it nicely to the others bikes in my shop.

As a bonus, all those extra parts helped me finish my K0. In the end, it cost me nothing but the time and effort. His K0 ended up in a museum and we added a plaque indicating the Restoration was by “the previous owner’s name”. His wife and Family were thrilled.

Best part I like is dedication to a collector who didn’t have enough time in his favour to complete it.

Great job
A noble act

Can550..... Steve Nelson (son of John Nelson, Nelson Honda, Ontario Honda and the original developer of Shannonville Motorsport Park) is building a small museum out near the Shanninville race track. His Father won the last 24 Hour Production Motorcycle Race at Mosport, in 1970 on a CB750 K0. He has a great photo of him (12 years old) and the Team, after the win. It was red, and sold as a “demo” the following week! He just had to have one. Photo attached.

Robbo...... thanks! I just finished my own K0. Two brothers had stripped it down and bought every thing they needed, from Honda Canada, 35 years ago. Wrapped HM300 Pipes, complete new bodywork (the tank was still wrapped in a Honda box, never opened), shocks, wiring etc., etc. I’ll post it up, as soon as I take some pics! Nicer than the “Nelson”bike.......

awesome story and amazing bike. Did this configuration get upped to 900cc in the 80s? I saw a silver half-fairing six cylinder Benelli in the Barber Museum this year and it was quite a sight (at a weekend of many sights).

Yes..... in 1978 Benelli upped their game to the 900 SEI. Slightly different bodywork and a larger bore. Lost the 6-6 pipes and some of it’s initial shock value..... and then Honda announced the CBX!

there were a few of these in melbourne ( australia ) and some still appear for italian days and shows etc but the one i remember best was the guzzi 250/4 , what a gorgeous little bike and the dealership couldn't give it away. it got moved from one side of the showroom to the other and back again, into the window and out again. i guess it got sold eventually but i don't remember ever seeing it again
i blame Terry

A few years ago, I restored a CBX. Awesome bike, but so much more bulk than my 750K’s that I sold it on. The Benelli is the exact opposite! It feels small when you get aboard, and just get’s better when you start moving!  Fantastic attic machine.

I believe the last 24 hour race @ Mosport was in 1973. Those were crazy times. We used to set up 2 headlights, each one pointing slightly outward and operated one at a time with the turn signal switch depending whether it was a left or righthander! Often the guys would run partway up the long straight with no lights!

Here's a couple pictures. Bottom one is Serge Cantin, the other is the race winners (1972 race) starting left - riders Serge Cantin, Dan Sorenson, Mendy Radbord, Jim Quirk, and Doug Teague. Team owner John Nelson is in the middle.

By the way, good news story about the resto's, congratulations.

I'd also be interested in the museum location. We have two race rounds at Shannonville this season and would stop in to visit.
