What to do with unwanted parts?
« on: February 13, 2019, 08:21:19 AM »
I bought my '73 CB500 last week. It came with some parts I know I won't use. Parts like a couple windshields (great shape), a Honda seat (couple smallish tears), lights, gauges, a '76 CB550... Seriously. A mostly there 1976 CB550. I didn't want it, but the seller was clearing out his shop. I joked that I'd pay him $100 more to leave it. Nope.

We loaded the CB550 on my trailer and started piling on parts. The seat, tank (no dents), side covers... He said the frame is straight, the motor was apparently fine when the bike was parked - pistons move freely, etc., no cracks... Definitely a little crusty - looks to be mostly surface though.

So, assuming I do NOT want to part this thing out piece by piece, any thoughts on what to do with it and the other stuff?

Thanks!

Post this in the for sale section of this board. Might be some guys that are looking for this stuff to finish a project. Does the bike have a title? Maybe someone wants to try and bring in it back to life.

IF you don't want to part it out you can price the package accordingly so someone else can and make a little money.

Or you could try to get that 550F going!

Well the obvious answer is to sell it either to a forum member who is willing to come by and pick it all up or list it on Craigslist with an attractive price.  E-bay if you want to shoot for top dollar and deal with parts packing/shipping etc..
If that is an F model 550 I may be interested in the seat and muffler if stock and you decide to sell off pieces.
If you plan to keep buying and collecting more bikes then you may just want to hold on to it for future use.

That frame says 1977 but the carbs are '76 or earlier. If the engine is a '77 (look at the engine # and check against the info here: http://www.sohc4.net/cb550-model-guide then it should have the improved rocker arm setup in the rocker cover and so by itself is worth around $100.

But there is a 'for sale' board where you can sell your items.

Oh, and if the engine is free I would swap it into the 500 frame. It is a direct swap and you get a useful bump in power and a superior clutch setup.

I can't tell from what I can see on the plate, but if that's a '77 550F, then those are the right carbs (the 77 F used different, older style carbs than the 77-78K) and it should have the upgraded valve cover.

So, maybe... since the current 500 seems to be running well, I pull the 550 engine/trans and hang on to it, If/when the 500 show signs... rebuild and swap in the 550.

Thanks guys

Go to harbor freight and get a $7 furniture dolly, screw a few boards to it so it doesn't fall over and make a dolly for the spare motor. That way it's easy to move around or just set it on a shelf.
