Swing Arm Bushings
« on: February 02, 2019, 06:06:19 am »
I am trying to remove the swing arm bushings on a 76 cb550.  These are the plastic ones that have an outside flange.

Does anyone have any tricks?  I have tried this before and broke them.

Don't worry about breaking them. They should be replaced anyway.

Try putting a dowel into the swing are bore and pushing them out.  They should come out fairly easily.  What 540nova said, the fiber/phenolic ones don't last long so replacing them is a good idea.

On bushing removal, I take a washer and shave enough off two sides were it will slip thru the bushing. Once it is inside the swingarm flip it flat against the bushing and press it out.  Hope this helps

Use a hack saw blade. Cut through/mostly through one spot maybe 2 if necessary. Take a screw driver blade etc and get under it and hammer it out in pieces.

I guess I'll have to add this process to my upcoming 550 book, too?

What 540nova said, the fiber/phenolic ones don't last long so replacing them is a good idea.
Any idea why mine have done 135.000 km and still don't show any play in spite of having been greased no more than three times in the last 100.000? I mean... I must have done something 'wrong'.  ;)

You must use a pressure washer!
Recommended to spray a lot of degreaser first on all bearings, then go hard with 130-150 BAR Kärcher or similar!   8) Warm water even better!! ;D
