73 350f splitting cases (help needed]
« on: February 12, 2019, 11:05:39 PM »
Hey everyone, I have a 350f that I have to split the cases, but I want to do so without a full tear down, I recently did a refresh on top end (early summer) and would like to avoid if possible. I have read some posts on a few other different models but I'm looking for advise on any little gremlins' I can run into as the service manual for this task is bleak at best. The reason for doing so is I recently found that my kick starter was not working, to be honest, I have never used it since I initially purchased the bike to check compression. After I serviced the bike got all the rebuilds done, brakes, clutch etc. and put in a good battery a couple years ago, I just use electric start. I was prepping to pull motor for winter clean up and paint and when dropping oil pan found a large piece of metal (my heart sank and I said words to make the strong blush) a chunk with a machined semi circle. Now up to this point I have been riding the bike weekly here in North Carolina, and it runs great, but not something to overlook. I pulled cases and kick start shaft and on the inside past the gear in a bottom is a shaft hole for the kick start to slide into, well this large chunk of metal is the top of that. The good news, if there is such in this case is the piece seems intact and looks as though it could be tig welded back and strengthened. I have minor welding skills and a friend with great skill and equipment,  so the welding part does not disturb if after closer inspection the area is stable. I'm quite sure I know when it broke and by whom, as I sourced out some of the refresh work back a few months ago and the first thing one of the guys did was try to kick start the bike, during which made one of those, "that was weird" comments, I cant prove it but here I am. Long post and I respect and appreciate any advise.  Thanks

You should be able to remove the lower case without disturbing the top, just have to remove all the clutch, primary shaft , etc.
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).
