So, any Britons getting those BMW's out of the water

That would be a nice salvage wouldn't it.
A container full of BMW bikes. Think of all the old
Honda's that could be bought after you sold the Beemers :)

I doubt that the containers are totally water tight so there might not be much to salvage by the time they are got out!!

They are in the US Tim but I'll fill you in.

Last Thursday the UK was battered by 100mph gales and a bloody big container ship went down, full of all sorts of nastie things. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Thanks for the article, I wondered about maritime law on the items washed on the beach.

I saw a pic on cnn.com of some folks pushing a BMW tourer up the beach.  Looked in pretty decent shape.  Not a bad find although you do have to report the find to make it legal.  I'm sure BMW will want them back :)

You have to report your "salvage" to the Acting Receiver of Wrecks, who may (or may not) demand that you return them. After 28 days I think you're in the clear.

Those guys in the SW of England have had centuries practice at this...

Don't know much about maritime laws. In firm ground, if you find something and want to go the lawful way, you declare it and it would be announced to find the legitimate owner. If he doesn't appear, after a given time it's yours. If he appears, I think you have the right to a reward (a percentage of the value). The same applies to treasures and the like.

I saw the images of the people pushing the beemer out of the crate. It's in my opinion a poisonous gift. You have the bike but you can't title it because you don't have proof of ownership nor have you paid the import duties. Much better to contact UK BMW and ask for a reward. I'm pretty sure BMW would be more than happy to pay 15% of the bike and pick it up by its own means, or at least the insurance will be happy with that. a 10% of a tourer BMW makes for a hefty sum...

On the other hand, if I was BMW, I'd just take the insurance money and write off the lot.  Why would they want a bike that's been smashed out of a crate, assembled on a beach and towed away?  For peace of mind they would have to run a "factory" check on it before letting it go for sale; and would they class it as "new"?

Somehow I get the feeling NOS BMW parts will start showing up on ebay soon.

I imagine what would happen is BMW writes off the bikes as a loss, puts in a
claim with their insurance company, and then the Insurance Co. hires out
'retrievers' to chase the salvergers.
