Before I start the bike
« on: February 22, 2019, 11:31:50 AM »
This is the first time I've pulled the motor and the cam and then reassembled and reinstalled the motor. I've set the cam timing according to Mark's book. I've set the valve lash and I'll static time the points. Is there anything else I need to do before I start this motor?

The purpose for pulling the motor was to replace pucks.

1qt Oil up top, and the rest in the oil tank.
Spin the starter without starting the bike 5 sec burst 2-3 times....and then start it.

+1,

I like to do this with no spark plugs, until I see oil pressure...

you could pull the valve adjuster caps and make sure you're getting oil to the top end before starting as well.

Electrical starter, no spark plugs.
My last build had some issues to make flow. I had to remove oil pump, drown it in oil again, unscrew the oil pressure valve and keep rotating the sprocket to get air bubbles out. Much thinner oil when priming pump can be easier to get it air free.

If having troubles with oil pressure you can try leaning the bike over while running it on starter to try to get air out.

You should be fine since it was not a total rebuild. Have a flashlight handy and peek in the oil tank and look for agitation when it starts. Level will drop some and you will see bubbles/movement etc quickly.  Fingers crossed no leaks for you !

i thought about the pump and if i'll have an issue since the motor hasn't been run in a while.  pretty sure i won't but if i have to drop the oil pan no big deal.  yeah eric no leaks will be nice if the new pucks do the job.  the old ones were pretty crispy.
